For TVs that don't have any kind of composite/component shared ports:

You can plug an old video game console's yellow composite plug into any TV's green component video slot and it will work, and come in much sharper... BUT in black and white.  ;)

Component video (red/green/blue cords) use the green channel as the main brightness (luminance) and sync channel, the other two cables carry the brightness information for the red and blue channels, which are combined to create your color picture. Composite video (the yellow cable) carries both the brightness and color information on the same line, which is why the quality isn't quite as good.

If you plug a yellow composite cable to your green component port, it will take the brightness information from composite and think it's meant to be the green channel. Since there's no information from the red or blue channels, it can only show a black and white picture.

In theory, you could get three different game consoles with yellow composite cords, plug each yellow cable into your green red and blue component ports and get a crazy colored image from all three...

Burgertime - Walk on gargantuan ingredients of a hamburger to make them to fall down some scaffolding. But watch out! Sentient weenies are out to get you!

Snake Rattle N Roll - A snake intends to climb his way to the moon, but must eat nibbly-pibblies and lick giant disembodied feet.

Dig Dug II - Invade and destroy a series of islands with your jackhammer. Inhabitants that protest can be pierced with an air compressor until exploding.

Crazy Taxi - Gleefully cause thousands of dollars in damage as you ignore every traffic law in order to get your passenger to KFC within 30 seconds.

Day of the Tentacle - An angry mutated tentacle attempts to take over the world by flushing himself down a time traveling toilet. A nerd, a sadistic med student, and a fat roadie attempt to make things right.

Off Topic / Re: The Worst and Best Job you've ever had

Worst job: Campus security - occasionally this job was fun, but the college had two tiers of security: the uniformed officers who got to deal with any major problems or disturbances on campus, and the lower tier "safety" officers. I was one of those lower tier guys. We got all the disgust you'd expect college kids to have towards a "rent-a-cop", minus any of the respect an actual police uniform would bring. We just had these red "Campus Safety" jackets, and let me tell you, the red jackets were the most hated guys on campus. While all the students were in class, we had to be out in the parking lots writing tickets to their vehicles. Don't get me wrong, they definitely deserved all the tickets they got: parking in handicap spots with no placards, not having permits, fake permits, not paying the meters, using an old ticket from the day before to try to fool me into not writing another one, etc. When you're writing a ticket, you can always sense an incoming screaming match by the sound of flip-flops shuffling rapidly toward you along with a "WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO MY CAR??!". When you're not doing that, you're usually having to chauffeur overweight students across campus in your golf cart, including some who leave menstrual remnants in the passenger seat. After all that, you'd think it would be nice to simply park in the shade and chill out for a few minutes, but that's when one of the upper tier officers will pass by and chide you about needing to patrol the lot for tickets. That officer then drives to the far corner of the parking lot where no one will bother them and nap in their car. After a year and a half, the boss called me in and announced he was cutting me. "We don't have quotas for writing tickets, but you're usually last. I don't know what you're good at, but it's not this."

Best job: Broadcast graphics operator - This is a side job that I don't get to do full time. Normally I work as a motion graphics designer. During the high school football season, Fox sends out a number of crews to cover some games and broadcast them on TV and the internet. I work in the truck running the graphics systems, the scoreboard, lower thirds, promos and all that stuff. It can be stressful doing a live broadcast, since you can't stop time, and the audience will see if you make a mistake. Generally though, everyone on the crew wants to have a great show and does their best to make the program as smooth as possible. This year I got the chance to run the graphics for a couple NHL games! There were two pre-season rookie games between the LA Kings and the new Vegas Golden Knights. I've been a Kings fan since I was a kid, so for me it was a pure treat. And it was the first ever official NHL game played by the Golden Knights. If I could somehow get into doing that full time, I'd be happy as can be.

This was only released in English for the Neo Geo, as "Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer"
It came to the Japanese PS1 as well, under its original name "Choujin Gakuen Gowcaizer"

Classic Video Games / Re: Your Opinion Of Golf Games

Neo Turf Masters is still my favorite golf game! The entire presentation makes it feel like a fun televised golf tournament.

The original Golf on NES is near and dear to me also. It's simple compared to anything else out there, but my friend and I would play it a lot when we were kids. Player 1 was "Sparkling White", the role which my friend would play. It was his game, so he was usually better at it. Player 2 was "Pathetic Red", my character. We would clown around with fake TV commentary on how the game played out. He usually won, but the times when Pathetic Red pulled off an upset were great. :D

Hardware and Tech / Re: Opinion on modded consoles
« on: November 22, 2017, 06:45:22 pm »
Many of my old consoles are modded in some way. Generally it's to improve the video quality beyond what was originally available. I'm definitely NOT one of those who say wacky things like "The developers intended you to see scanlines!!" or "The colors are supposed to be blurry like that!!".

Atari 2600 (heavy sixer) modded with S-video
Colecovision modded with RGB
NES modded with a Playchoice 10 PPU for component video (previously the only way to get RGB from an NES until...)
Famicom AV modded with NESRGB for HDMI
TurboDuo modded for component and region unlocking

I have a few old Game Boys with scratched screens that I want to overhaul soon with glass and backlights.

One thing I'm against though are case mods. They're never good. Even the "well done" ones are terrible. I'm talking spray painting an NES gold and putting a triforce logo on it, or stuffing a Raspberry Pi Zero into a NES cart for some reason. Game systems have a certain iconic look, and to ruin one for some artistic whimsy is upsetting.

For a second I thought there was going to be an amazing online game set in the world of FF4.  :o

Pretty much all neo geo games can be found on other consoles with very few exceptions, not to mention most of them ports being arcade perfect.

Neo geo aes and mvs might be the real things but nowadays It's just an collectors piece especially considering the combination of the prices and pretty much all them games being easily available on other original consoles compared to other systems if were negating emulators.

Well, true enough, but considering that the OP is asking about collecting for these oddball systems, and that we're on a site called VGCollect, I figure the ports to other systems aren't a factor. Plus considering that most ports weren't close to perfect until the Dreamcast and Playstation 2 era, it really says a lot about the raw power the Neo Geo had. That's one of its big allures, an obscure system that outpowered all of its contemporaries, and was supported by a good lineup of games. It's amazing that Garou Mark of the Wolves came out on a system from 1990.

With this system you don't go on a crazy binge and buy a ton of games at once for it. You hunt for months to find good prices, and over the years you'll savor each new game you find.

Holy Final Fantasy VI Batman!  Is this still available?  Looks awesome.

I don't know of there's still any Myth sites still around. The Mill used to be the main one, but I think they're long dead. I still have all the old files though if you want them. :D

We didn't know how to script single player maps back then, so they were all multiplayer stages: Narshe, Doma, Nikeah, The Phantom Forest, the Opera House, a boat battle stage and a few others that I can't remember at the moment.

It's always good fun to use the map editor to switch the main game's characters with FF6 ones!

Lords of the Realm II

It's half RTS (battle scenes) and half economic management, but all fun! I could still get lost in this game for hours. You assign peasants to different tasks, like woodcutting, farming, or blacksmithing. Gradually you build up enough weapons to raise an army, then send them off to conquer your neighbors. I love how the game's rival nobles all have different personalities and strategies.

Myth II: Soulblighter

It's an RTS, but with no economic aspects. In each stage, you are given a group of soldiers, and it's up to you to see that they survive to the end. You can't produce new ones, and enemies can catch you out of position if you're not careful. The story mode is fun, and there's a lot of downloadable plugins that people have made over the years that add new and crazy units to the game. Ages ago my friend and I made a whole set of Final Fantasy VI maps and characters. :D It was so much fun.

If you want a fun console outside the norm that doesn't cost too much, I'd say try out the Colecovision. It's the best of the pre-NES consoles, with lots of solid arcade ports. Check out Pepper II, Oil's Well, and the excellent Frogger port.

The PC Engine / TurboGrafx 16 has some fun games, but overall if I'm being honest, it's not worth anywhere near what it costs.

The Neo Geo costs a ton. It always has, but if you like arcade style games, it's got some real gems. eBay and Neo-Geo.com are great places to pick up some games, but beware of games coming out of places like France and China.

Windjammers got remastered for PS4 recently.

Sure, it was originally a Neo Geo game from 1994, but Pong is still alive in 2017.  :D

Sounds like a frightening communist dream world...  ;D

If only it were the case where everyone gave and worked for their community and did their part. Unfortunately it's a part of human nature to want to get the most with the least effort, and once people figure out that they will be given everything without needing to work for it, the whole system goes downhill.

That's sort of off topic of course, but in this scenario where value is eliminated from our collections, I'm sure many would be perfectly fine with uploading their games to this supposed main spacecraft computer. I don't think most people here collect these old things because we think they're worth a lot. For lots of us they represent a sort of mental time machine that can transport us to happy, simpler times in our lives. Even games that we didn't have as kids can give off a sentimental feeling of a different era. There's also a certain level of fun in simply creating a library full of excellent old carts, an itch that emulators can't quite scratch.

And then you'll have the one person who realizes that his rare game hasn't been made available on the main starship computer. Suddenly it's in demand! Do I hear 10 credits? 20 credits? Sold for 50 credits! :D
