While I don't interact with any of the affected news outlets at all, the major takeaway is industry consolidation. In short, competition is good.

Unfortunately, both IGN and PushSquare groups are heavily left leaning, so if they post anything that has to do with politics, even moderately conservative opinions will be removed and users banned.

I would argue the worse part is that these so called journalists directly try to push their agendas, directly want to take influence on creative freedom and basically dictate what is ok and what isn't (in their mind).

Both left and right wing politics have a vocal voice within the industry. While journalism itself may be dominated by the former, there are just as many news coverage and reactionary YouTube channels for the latter, which the argument could be made are just as influential with their respective audiences. If you think one group "directly [tries] to push their agendas" and wants "to take influence on creative freedom and basically dictate what is ok," then you must acknowledge that the statement applies to individuals from both groups, and certainly not all individuals. That is all I have to say on the matter.

Please give me examples of conservative leaning gaming media. Not poking the bear. Genuinely want to know about them so I can watch their content.

Game journalism has been... not great... for a long time. There's a lot of crap out there. The best of the gaming sites IMO, GameTrailers.com, died out a long time ago. Unfortunately, both IGN and PushSquare groups are heavily left leaning, so if they post anything that has to do with politics, even moderately conservative opinions will be removed and users banned. I know this as I have been temp banned from both sites at some point for expressing a non-hostile conservative opinion.

Where am I going with this, you may be asking... If IGN has bought out their competitors, then there is no great loss. It's simply the consolidation of the same opinion under one banner and this will have zero impact on the readers and those that interact on their sites. That is... until with everything in the gaming industry at the moment... they start to downsize.

It has nothing to do with being "left leaning". To be honest, most of the top comments on all IGN posts are heavily right leaning. Usually some pretty sick stuff at that. Politics have nothing to do with this consolidation. It's about finances. We're headed towards another 80's game crash. Everything is about profit and pleasing share holders now. Gaming isn't about the art of it anymore. AAA games will implode, and all that will be left are the indie titles that have held the gaming industry up for the last decade. Small gaming sites can no longer thrive like they used to.

You missed what I was trying to convey. These sites all have the same ideals, the same mindset. They're essentially all the same. Now that it's all under one banner... there's been no loss.

I didn't miss your point. Your point is purely political, and there isn't any sort of agenda. The loss is huge. This isn't good for the gaming industry. Every site being under one banner means less trust, more shady back room deals, and a lot of people aren't going to trust any reviews on these sites anymore. IGN already has a bad enough reputation and this is going to seem like the Amazon or Starbucks of the gaming journalism industry. Buying up everybody, monopolizing, and killing trust. But sure, it's all about "leftist" ideas. Whatever that means.

Fair enough. You didn't miss my point. You saw it and ignored it entirely.

If you still have trust in the reviews these sites have then I don't know what to tell you. They haven't been trustworthy... any of them... in at least a decade.

General / Re: Fighting Game Collectors, what do you recommend?
« on: May 17, 2024, 09:29:42 am »
While not a collector of the genre by any means, I was trying to get the newest of each of my favorite fighting games during the PS4 gen.

Mortal Kombat
Tekken
Street Fighter
Soul Caliber
Dead or Alive

The only one I feel I missed out on was Killer Instinct as that went exclusive to Xbox. Maybe with the turn of the tide and Microsoft owned IPs making their way to PS5 and Nintendo... we'll see Killer Instinct make the leap.

Some more obscure and older fighting games that were fun...

Warpath Jurassic Park
Bloody Roar
Primal Rage
Toshinden

Off Topic / Re: FF7 Rebirth Soundtrack

You can buy the songs individually on iTunes for $0.99 it looks like

Interesting. Does iTunes still put the file in a propriatary format where you can't listen to it on anything but an Apple device or require iTunes on the device? It was Apple's closed system that turned me off of doing business with them.

Hmm... it seems Amazon allows the purchase of the individual songs on PC. I was checking on mobile and didn't see the individual download links. You just can't preview the tracks to ensure you're buying the right one.

Off Topic / FF7 Rebirth Soundtrack

A bit frustraited at the FF7 Rebirth soundtrack. Love the music, but not willing to pay $70 for an absured collection of 175 songs across 7-8 discs. There's like... a dozen songs in the game I really liked. Went to Amazon to piece meal it at a buck each, and they don't even allow you to listen to the tracks without purchase... let alone purchase individual songs. So that sucks. Cheapest I can go is $45 for the entire digital group of 175 songs... but I'm still wasting about $30 on the 160 songs I wouldn't bother listening too more than once.

Very annoying.

Finally beat FF7 Rebirth (PS5). That marks my 3rd game completed this year. I won't go into details of the story, but I enjoyed it and look forward to the third and final entry in the Remake.

I opted to try out Fallout 4 which thankfully was a PS Plus title last year that I had claimed. I'm also playing Helldivers 2 (can't really beat this can you?), God of War R (PS5) and going to replay RE5 (PS4).

Last year's Apple Arcade exclusive TMNT game Splintered Fate is coming to Switch first and then other consoles. It's a co-op roguelike.

Appreciate the heads up. I like the art. Might have to look into this if they release a physical version. Hopefully it makes its way to PS5.

Modern Video Games / Re: SEGA declares this is the Year of Shadow
« on: April 10, 2024, 06:04:46 pm »
I've never been a huge fan of Shadow, TBH. While I know the character will be in the third Sonic movie, I'm hoping Metal Sonic makes an appearance as a formidable foe as well.

As for Sonic x Shadow... I'll have to wait and see more.

If you are thinking about a PS3...I'd say do it. It's a great system (I just bought another yesterday...I found one and was like...why the heck not), and I personally think PS3's and 360's are only going to rise in value. It was the last gen you could really just plug in and play with out relying on the internet.

Agreed. The PS3 era was in many ways the pinnacle of gaming, at least for me. Series like Uncharted, Mass Effect, and Witcher were born in this era. The PS4 improved upon them graphically and was a great consolidation system, bringing many favorites from various eras and ecosystems into one place.

To give you an idea, I've had a PS5 since launch and only 3 generation exclusive games were interesting enough for me to buy...
 - A Plague Tale Requiem
 - Star Wars Jedi Survivor
 - FF7 Rebirth

All my other PS5 games are also on PS4... including the newest God of War.

Guess I will have to wait another couple of years before getting my hands on a PS5 or a Xbox One, am saving money just to get an used PS4, by the way I saw some videos of Stellar Blade at TikTok and the game looks pretty decent, it seems that the main character is taking everybody attention with those "details"  8)

Honestly, most games don't take long to have a price drop. 6-12 months and they're down by 30-50% -- especially on big days like Black Friday. Here's the thing. If you're working to snag a PS4... enjoy the PS4. It's a better library and 95% of modern releases are also on PS4. Unless you're wanting very specific games exclusive to PS5, which there aren't many, just wait for PS6 and see if it'll be PS5/4 backwards compatible. Maybe by then, the PS5 will have a library worth owning a system for.

As it's a subscription "freebie" I'm not adding it to my collection, but hey... saves me $70.

Excuse me but since when the games started to cost 70 bucks ?  :o

They started this gen. Not all games, but many now. Just played the Stellar Blade demo. It's fun, but I'm not spending the requested $70. There is one game per year, I'm willing to spend that on. Last year, it was Zelda Tears of the Kingdom (Switch). This year, it was FF7 Rebirth (PS5). Next year... who knows if I'll even be alive. There's certainly nothing that has a concrete release window that I'm looking forward too anymore.

My Playstation Plus sub granted me an unexpected surprise -- Gave me one of the games on my list:

As it's a subscription "freebie" I'm not adding it to my collection, but hey... saves me $70.

Polite pass on this one. I'm no masochist. Trying to remember every Mario game played over my life and then rank their difficulty? Yeah... polite pass.
