General / Re: Ever bought a game for a system you didn't own?
« on: March 19, 2022, 04:29:41 pm »
The whole reason why I'm on VGcollect has to do with this. I bought my very first 3DO game in 2017 back when I was a teenager. The game was OverDrivin'. I Google searched the game and found a link to itm#15478. That's how I found VGcollect and that what fueled me to start collecting. Eventually I got my first 3DO console in 2021.

Tried changing #213062 out of "Xbox One Accessory" and into the general Accessory category like it was originally and how it should always have been, but it was rejected. It's the exact same thing as #135822 but in a different color. This is NOT an item made for Xbox specifically, they're just regular headphones with a standard headphone plug. Astro decided to put some giant Xbox lettering on the box just for cosmetic reasons, because there's some green on the headphones and that's Xbox's colour. The box still says that it's compatible with PS4, Switch, Mobile, e.t.c. so it should be in the Accessory category, not Xbox One Accessory. #135822 for instance is the same headphones but in different colours, and it has a big PS4 lettering on it, but it's in the appropriate category, so why shouldn't #213062 be in the same category aswell?

Off Topic / Re: Are You _______ About Someone Knowing Your IP Address
« on: January 28, 2022, 11:13:40 pm »
I work in IT Security so I'll educate you a little but on how IPs work.

Fun fact: did you know there's a massive secret data center near my hometown in a remote region of Canada? Of course you didn't, even the common inhabitants of my hometown aren't aware of it. I had the misfortune of being a little too exploratory with my late night drives when I got my first car at 18. One night I'm exploring the outskirts of the town and I notice that there's a large plot of land somewhere which is all fenced-off and the building is very far away (there's a lot of open space between the fences and the building). As I stay in front of the gates with my car, I also notice that weirdly the windows of that building are very reflective, we can't see inside no matter what.

Then an armed man comes out of the building and approaches me. I must leave, but I was still very curious so I was eventually explained by someone what this place was. According to them it's literally the largest data center in Canada, and the reason why it was in such a remote region is because our cold climate is ideal for these kind of servers. And these windows, they say, are made out of Titanium and are resistant to all types of firearms and even some explosives. I'm not going to reveal where that data center is though, the government is probably already watching me just for making this post lol  ;D

On my end, it was my copy of OverDrivin' on the 3DO, and this is exactly what led me to find VGcollect.

We're in 2017 and I'm still just a teenager with barely 80 items in my "collection". I visit the shittiest thrift store which smells weird in my hometown (in a remote region of Canada). Inside a plastic bin and in the middle of lots of PC shovelware I see a cover that intrigues me. OverDrivin' for the 3DO, CIB with the obi-strip inside. At that time I very vaguely knew about the 3DO. I also had no idea that this game was in fact the very first Need For Speed which was branded differently in Japan at the time. So I ended up paying 5$ for it, and I immediately hop on my bicycle and get home. I look it up on the internet, and that's how I find VGcollect.com, thanks to item #15478. I'm sooo frickin proud that I create my VGcollect account and this item is the very first that I add to my collection. If you go to my profile and click on the gallery you'll see hilariously outdated photos of my "collection" when it started out in 2017, and you can always see OverDrivin' proudly displayed on the pictures.

I also have another interesting thrift store story, but it doesn't involve video games.

For a long time I was desperately looking for the VHS of The Fifth Element. I would go very often to the thrift stores and check EVERY bin for it but it just never popped up. Then one day, I'm there with my cousin. We notice that they added a new shelf with more tapes inside. On the bottom tablet the tapes were very misorganised and placed chaotically. Because I'm standing up I can't see the tapes on top of that misorganised pile (since they're hidden from my point of view by the next tablet). So I crouch down (without looking) and I say to my cousin "Watch this, I'm going to FINALLY find the Fifth Element without even looking". Just by feeling the tapes with my hand, I blindly pick one VHS on top of that pile... AND IT'S THE FUCKING FIFTH ELEMENT. We flipped the f* out. What are the chances? (especially since that's exactly the reason why we were at the thrift store in the first place)

This has been a feature I personally suggested among other staff. How such a feature is introduced and implemented is an issue, though. There is a considerable backlog of site issues that need to be addressed both on user side and mod side, and other features may need to be addressed before solving this issue. Just know that you're not alone in having this opinion. It's not uncommon for me to discover new items in my collection that warrant new entries being made, for myself or for others.

There's already a notification system for accepted/rejected edits, so I suggest it could be implemented in the same way? But anyways, in my situation, it is the biggest issue that I'm facing on the site right now. I suppose many others agree with us aswell. I wonder how long it will take until this is implemented, because the day it will be implemented I will have to review my entire collection and make sure everything is accurate. Until then, my collection will just continue to grow and it will get even worse for me the longer we wait.

Often we have items in the database that are created with missing information. x item is created and everyone assumes it's the only variant. But sometimes, much later afterwards, someone realises that two or more variants of that item exists and it becomes necessary to create a second item to differenciate the two. In this instance, the original item gets changed to one of the two variants. But if I'm unlucky enough to own the second variant, since the original item now becomes the first variant, it creates an error in my collection database, because now it says I own an item which I don't actually own.

It happened to me once with item #1521 when it was found out there was a second variant of it, which was created as item #163912. One day I'm just browsing the PS2 section for fun and I notice the two, and realise the item I had added to my collection initially is now incorrect.

And now it just happened again with item #175417 and #211404. I own the latter, and thank god I logged on at the perfect moment to notice the new item in the Latest Items bar, because otherwise I would have been stuck with yet again an item rendered incorrect due to changes in its description.

We seriously need to implement a notification system for when items in your collection are modified, to avoid added items becoming retroactively incorrect. I'll have to go back and double check all of my 1000+ items in my collection now, because I'm starting to notice that at least a good amount of them have become incorrect over the years. Just imagine those with 10000+ items in their collection already!

News / Re: Also On Platforms Feature
« on: December 01, 2021, 11:25:09 am »
I'm not too keen on this new feature, it makes the items page look too overwhelming and it feels a bit unneccesary. But at least it doesn't mess with the rest of the features.

My expectations were a bit low before release since this is Wardrum Studios we're talking about (now renamed "Grove Street Games"). They made the absolutely terrible San Andreas port for the 360/PS3, these versions of the game are riddled with bugs that didn't exist in the original game. But despite the new GTA Trilogy having many bugs and things that are completely retarded, it's much better than I had anticipated. Grove Street Games / Wardrum Studios is still a completely incompetant studio, but the new games aren't bad, at least this time they made more improvements than screw ups. These days every single game has some sort of backlash, YouTubers have an extremely negative mindset with every game release so they make it seem like everything is worse than it actually is. GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition definitively doesn't deserve the hate.

Still, fuck War Drum Studios / Grove Street Games.

This change made the search feature a lot more annoying to use. If I do a search for "animal crossing" then now all you get are PAL versions that don't have numbers in the title, and a flood of 50000 amiibo cards. I had to scroll through five pages just to find a single American listing of this game whose official title matches my search query perfectly.

This is just a terrible user experience. Sure, there are advanced search features that would narrow it down quicker than scrolling through page after page, but why should we have to rely on that when previously all I had to do was type the name and the right item would come up right away

That's why I often just use the Browse section. I just go straight to the appropriate category and from there I scroll in alphabetical order. It has the added advantage of making sure I'm adding the correct variant because they literally all pop up there which may not happen with a search.

If one day I become a father my son's first name shall be Scarface: The World Is Yours on the PS2, pronounced "Jef".

I just have to agree with dhaabi, trip and jason. Some of us (such as myself) are looking to track every single variant and this kind of stuff is very important to us. No, it absolutely does not belong in the notes section because ultimately these items will have slightly different box art within eachother, so it wouldn't make sense to have all these items being one single item when they're actually different.

If you don't like the numbers being added to avoid confusion, just pick any item. At the end your own collection list does not matter to us, but having an accurate database does.

* Note that I am not a staff member of VGcollect and have no affiliation with the website. Just want to make sur people don't think I'm speaking on behalf of VGcollect considering the mildly rude wording of my post.

Video Game Database Discussion / Re: LeoneFamily's VGC Database Work
« on: October 19, 2021, 04:22:32 pm »
Well, you're certainly giving me way more credit than I deserve regarding my knowledge of PlayStation, I think.

It's my way to thank you for your amazing contributions to the database over the years but especially in recent times  ;)

I did change the entry name, though. "Early box design" isn't an ideal descriptor as that would require someone to know what the physical characteristics of later box designs are too.

Oh yes! Sepia is a perfect way to describe it, I totally agree!

Would like to point attention to the following items:

https://www.vgcollect.com/item/207702
https://www.vgcollect.com/item/95299

Item 207702 I have created myself. It has exactly the same text, barcode, item number, e.t.c. than the other. I called it "early box design" because it seems to follow the box style of the very first japanese model (SCPH-1000) while the other design looks more like the later revision boxes. If "early box design" is not a good name, go ahead and change it. I'm sure dhaabi must know something about it? (given he's our PlayStation connaisseur god)  8)
