Classic Video Games / Re: 25th anniversary of SEGA Saturn
« on: December 22, 2019, 08:22:36 pm »
Some of my most fond memories are with SEGA's 32-bit powerhouse Saturn!

Without re-hashing previous posts replies on the subject..

I would defend reputation of bringing sub-par ports of software back in the day recommending the awesome exclusive games that were available on the system instead. It was the first system I was hyped-up for after playing plenty of SEGA arcade games growing up and reading previews in magazines. Despite my local rental store only offering a handful of Saturn games, I enjoyed using the system to play Audio-CD around the house.

Eventually would own a PlayStation in 1997 - It would be a few years later 2002 I would start modding, ripping, burning Saturn games (preferably imports) re-igniting my passion for the system again. The only other time I was as hyped for a release was SEGA's Dreamcast North American launch on September 9, 1999.

My parents bought an NES when I was a kid and we would play Super Mario Bro + Dunk Hunt games. I do remember going to the local video-rental store to rent NES games such as Blaster Master, Mega Man, and The Adventures of Lolo.

Besides my parents also had a (MS-DOS) PC computer, eventually we would upgrade to a (Windows) Packard Bell, then Compaq Presario. Also have fond memories going to stores buying soft, and hard floppy discs playing many games on PC.

Overall great memories playing SNES games, renting them at Blockbuster Video. Leading up to deciding what upcoming 32-bit home console I wanted and decided on SEGA Saturn over its competitors. Fond memories playing Die Hard Arcade on arcade, was my #1 reason I wanted Saturn since it was an exclusive game. PlayStation in '97, and waiting in line on 9/9/99 for SEGA Dreamcast.

I mostly played arcade oriented games, but also enjoyed platform, strategy, and RPGs. I would later own a PS2 and GC.

I know almost nothing about RPG' video games so please tell me why you like them if you do.

Why do you think so many people prefer RPG's over so many other types of games? Now the only RPGs I've actually played are a few Pokemon games for Gameboy Advance and GUN for PlayStation 2 those were fun.

I currently can't stand Strategy turn based RPG video games where you line up your characters and tell them to fight like some kind of board game. the strategy turn based battles in some RPGs really bore me. I am a casual gamer too I don't like games to be hard,

but On this one Genesis game I lost all characters on the first battle and then got a game over and had to start over from the beginning and it killed RPGs for me there.

I think it was Phantasy Star I think not too sure. I liked the story but hated the combat system,

all the menus in RPGs confuse me All I know how to play is Pokemon games but not other type of turn based combat RPG

I don't see what is so great about them, I have yet to play Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 and Final Fantasy X for the PS2 but I hesitate to play an RPG because of how complicated they are usually

Does anyone else feel the same way as me?

The hours required to complete an RPG, the niche market (supply & demand) like other mentioned make them more sought after.

Personally I'm not a huge fan of RPG in general, when I was younger and had more time on my hands I enjoyed traditional turn-based, action, role-playing games. I find myself as I get older appreciating strategy & tactical RPGs where I play in short bursts and come back to later.

I enjoy the story, character development, music, gameplay, preferentially from JRPGs. A break from playing arcade oriented video games.

Although i'm with you not enjoying excessive random-encounters. I recommend you give Final Fantasy X a try, it may be daunting at first but realize you can always save your progress along the way and take it at your own pace. As for cryptic missions you also have GameFAQS guides available.
