Stopped by the thrift store and found a Game Boy SP, which was great in it self, I would've bought that for the 13 bucks alone, then I noticed it had a carry case and 4 games! Pretty nice deal really, though it is missing a power cord, so that is an issue for actually using it, though it does turn on, but it won't start a game because I think the battery is too low.

Games are Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario 3, Tak 2, Harry Potter Quidditch World Cup, and Frogger Adventures.  Not exactly high quality stuff other than the Mario one lol

There was also a practically matching red DS Lite there too for 20 bucks, but it also had no power adapter, no pen, no games, and the hinge was just trashed.  Like a swinging door.  Screen was a tad messy too, maybe cleanable, but I didn't feel it was worth it. Maybe if the hinge wasn't shot, I would've, but I passed on that.  I swear, I have the hardest time getting systems with cords lol I still have a Genesis Model 2 with no cords that I need to find some for lol

Oh boy more FPS where do I sign up? Stalker is like almost 8 years old now anyway, and it's pc exclusive. Leveled off is the problem it's hit the wall.

That is true, man, I forgot STALKER came out in like 2007 lol What you brought up though are still great examples of good modern games though, so not sure why you are excluding them.

Well yes we have came along way from banging coconuts together. Great games never turn bad however, or they weren't that great to begin with, tiring of a game is not the same thing, and yes the NES, and genesis were notorious for the shovelware. But nice 2d graphics couldn't hide poor gameplay. Why don't you check out the big guns E3 1995 game offerings, and you might see why we call it the golden 90s, and then check E3 2013 you will see the hotest new video games like the best tv shows you can watch with your xbox, or banging wii drums in a band if you ever dreamed that. A whole lot of power yes but not a whole lot used. The last game to impress me was skyrim so can you tell me what console games impressed you with there revolutionary video games on the xbox one, and ps4 exactly? What games exactly would you say were revolutionary, creative, and innovative excluding elder scrolls, fallout,  batman, last of us more than the late 90s, and early 00s video games like half life, halo, resident evil 2, golden eye 007, DOOM, starcraft, ocarina of time,  silent hill, sonic, final fantasy 7, chrono trigger etc.. In fact can you even name 1 in the last 5 years?

Those systems just launched lol They aren't going to have their magnum opus already.

Also why exclude those games? Those are good examples of great games lol You have games right there that are fantastic modern games.  If I had to go with more...Games like STALKER and Metro 2033/Last Light brought about some fantastic atmospheric experiences that rely more on the setting than trying to bring about new gameplay experiences...probably not revolutionary or anything, but they standout from the usual shooter crowd for sure.  Off the top of my head, not sure what else I would put, I don't play everything, so I can't say for sure, but I've seen a number of games that do a lot of great stuff.  Sure, they might not all be revolutionary, but those games come from a time where we didn't already have the same experiences and were new, but that doesn't automatically make what comes today as bad or boring because it isn't constantly breaking new ground.  The technology has leveled off a lot more since those days so there isn't such massive leaps and changes.

I'm more modern leaning myself.  A lot of my favorite games these days simply don't exist on retro systems, things like Metro, STALKER, Fallout (Lots of Post Apocalyptic lol), so for me, there's plenty to enjoy with modern, but there's of course good retro stuff. For me, it's probably 75% Modern/25% Retro in terms of playing.
I suppose there's a few exceptions. But a video game hasn't truly impressed me in atleast 4 years. Back in the 90s a no name developer could release a game, and make profit without even getting the loyalities. Now most can't even afford to advertise there game let alone turn a profit. So what you get are a few big players left who have monoplised things for the most part selling the same crap what sells, not what drives creativity, and original video games. But there's a few still around that get through the cracks still.

It wasn't really any different back then either.  Tons of bad sequels, tons of sequels that really didn't add a lot more to the original game, shitty, shitty, games made by developers who don't know any better, games just being made to see what would stick, there was A LOT of that back then.  Nowadays it's just done at different budget levels with larger gaps between the big guys and small guys.  I'm regularly finding amazing games every year or at least every other year.  Some genres are doing better than others for sure, but I feel there's plenty of good in the modern market.  It just needs to hurry up and sort out all the sketchy stuff that's cropped up in the past few years involving microtransactions, free to play, and rushed development times.

STALKER: Lost Alpha finally was released and it's some really great stuff.  Every map so far has been either overhauled or completely rebuilt and that doesn't include new areas they added.  It's almost like doing a vanilla playthrough of Shadow of Chernobyl, but there are a lot of changes.

oh my god that song is awful

aaaaaaaaaaaaagh

I don't mind some vocaloid stuff, Supercell used it very well for the one album, but this isn't the first time I've heard the vocals used like that and it's obnoxious lol

Grabbed Resident Evil 4 for the Wii for 13 bucks which didn't seem too bad.  I don't actually like the Wii version very much, I had it when it first came out, but I thought the gun controls were terrible which was a shame as it's an amazing game.  Mostly just got it for collecting purposes.  Just need to grab the Gamecube version and Gamecube premium edition.

I fully support a separate digital section too.  My collection is just for the physical stuff because I feel that is really collecting them, but if there was a digital option, I'd probably go and add in the 150+ games I have on Steam.

Classic Video Games / Re: Top 3 Games of a Generation

I could see how God of War could be the best PS2 game, maybe not better than MGS 3 but just the scale of the game was insane and clearly those games have had a huge influence on modern games.
This is an interesting idea, Im not even going to attempt the 16 bit generation, haha would be very tough
So for the 32 bit era
#3-Radiant Silvergun- I think it deserves to be on this list, it was a great send off to a dying genre
#2-MGS- Fantastic mature game when there weren't any mature games. Great story, great controls everything is great
#1- Ocarina of Time- Do I need say anything more?

If I was doing like an unbiased top 3 of what should be defined as the top games of a generation, I'm thinkGod of War would be on there for sure because basically the majority of those action beat em up games that came after, were just trying to be God of War.  Even games that weren't that same style, wanted to be like God of War lol It had a definite influence.

This is all just personal stuff and while I played all the console GoW games, they were a one time deal.  No reason to go back and replay I thought.  The ones I posted for that time were games I played the hell out of multiple times. I probably had hundreds of hours in Halo for how often we played it, starting at night and played till the sun came up lol

Really great find there.  I'm gonna have to go back to trying garage sales again I feel as I'm not finding anything else at the flea market or thrift shops lately, particularly the flea market as they've really dropped the amount of people doing garage sales.  Apparently once it hits the hot times down in SWFL, they aren't as likely to come out for that.

Is there anything for toys down this way? Like a big toy shop or place that also has action figures? There's kinda some videogame ones I'd want, but don't know of any with any sort of large selection for that.  And not like Toys-R-Us which is all new stuff.

Classic Video Games / Top 3 Games of a Generation
« on: April 26, 2014, 07:59:01 pm »
I was just thinking about this the today and if you had to pick one specific generation of games, what would be your top 3? You can go through all the generations if you want to put the time into it also lol

PS2/Xbox/GC Era (I think Dreamcast too? I forget which era that fits into)

Resident Evil 4 - GC/PS2 - This is one hell of a multi-system game for me.  I played it at least a half dozen times on the Gamecube when it first came out, this game was just fantastic.  I never really liked the previous ones, I hated the controls too much, but this one with its better control scheme and vast amounts of replayability to upgrade weapons and unlock extras had me replaying it so much.  Then they released it on PS2 with even more content and I played it a few more times there.  This is a serious favorite of mine.  Been meaning to actually grab the recent HD release as I heard they actually did it right this time lol

Halo: Combat Evolved - Xbox - While Halo became sort of the mainstream knockaround game for AAA franchises (Before Call of Duty took over), the first was a game I truly enjoyed.  It wasn't just a big fun campaign that was good with a friend, it had amazing multiplayer to it.  It was what Goldeneye was on the N64, it's local play was absolutely fantastic.  Me and my friends since the launch of that would get together every weekend to play Halo.  We would be down in my friends room with upwards of four tvs and systems all networked together to play games that could last a few hours since we liked to play with no shields, making deaths quick lol We even did some slightly more professional matches locally within the gaming community we had where we had teams put together to fight others.  We regularly played after that till around Halo 3 where we started to fade away from the series.  That game will always have good memories for me.

Metal Gear Solid 3 - PS2 - The third one was kind of a hard choice, I knew it was likely to be a PS2 game, but I wasn't sure if I was gonna put Okami or something like Kingdom Hearts 2 down for this, but I feel in the end, I have played more Metal Gear Solid 3 than those two.  As a series, I think it's mostly just okay.  I didn't play the first one, only watched it, and then I had played MGS2, which was just alright, but MGS3 was awesome.  I love how it added in survival elements, you could defeat bosses in multiple ways, lots of collectible stuff, it just had some great replay value which matters to me and involves lots of collecting and finding items. It also has a number of very memorable moments in it where you are basically gonna always remember them.

I might spend the time and go through the rest of the generations here eventually.  I also think 360/PS3/Wii counts now since we are into the...8th? I think that's right with the Xbox One/PS4/Wii U.
