Modern Video Games / Xbox 360, PS3, or Wii?
« on: April 10, 2015, 10:58:15 am »
Now that effective this year Last generation will fall in the ocean, which of the systems did you like the most? It was the longest generation of all time, and there were tons of the good and the bad.

This is a very good time to discuss this as the last generation will be done soon. Wii has been dead for a time, PS3 was announced by Sony last year to end in 2015, and Microsoft said 2016, however with the latter, the 360 is already severely down so that extra bit of time will be marginal at best.

Some big games for each system-

Xbox 360:
Halo
Gears of War
Forza
Alan Wake
Akai Katana
Kinect SPorts
Kinect Adventure
Banjo Nut and Bolts
Nintey Nine Nights
Lost Odyssey
Fable
Forza Horizon
Project Gotham 3-4
Steel Battalion
Splinter Cell Conviction
Mass Effect 1
Saints Row 1

Playstation 3:
Uncharted
Killzone
Final Fantasy X/-X-2 remake
Haze
LBP
Disgaea 3-4
Demon Souls
God of War 3
MGSIV
Gran Tourismo
Heavy Rain/Beyond

Wii:

Super Mario Galaxy
Twilight Princess
Let's Tap
Madworld
Red Steel
Conduit
NiGHTS 2
Carnival Games
Xenoblade
Super Smash Bros.

Well this may not be the best idea since there are hundreds of games on Xbox and other systems not on gamecube than the other way around. I mean if you remove the PS2, the Xbox list using your formula would be massive to the point of it being unfair. If you only use PC though it could work.

I personally own neither of these consoles, I have a Wii which I take advantage of the backwards compatibility, I was thinking of getting some original Xbox games for my 360, but then I found out about what I mentioned previously (and now I've sold my Xbox 360).

It looks like the majority here are swaying towards Xbox, but in the end, it comes down to what exclusives appeal to you.  Surely you should be able to find a list of exclusives available on each platform.
Well exclusives and features of course. Both of which had quite a few.

I'd say Gamecube probably because of the stuff with it. I know that Xbox has better multiplats in most cases and a better sound system and the hard drive. However, I feel like the Gamecube has a bit of a more diverse library of exclusive games compared to the xbox, and with optimal accessories like the gamecube, it can double as the perfect way to play all Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games on your TV in 480p( or 480i w/o component), which I feel is something that can't be overlooked given the amount of titles available. I also really like the controller for the Gamecube over the Xbox controller layout, and most of the multiplats I've found for gamecube are mostly good so far. Online support for gamecube is pretty bad compared to the xbox, but there are ways to still play a few games like Phantasy Star Online Episodes 1+II online thanks to private servers. The graphics are pretty good for a 1999 chipset design and its got very fast loading times compared to xbox(+ps2)due to the mini-dvd discs( limited data is a downer) and design.

So I'd think I've give Gamecube a slight edge over the Xbox, and I enjoy picking up stuff for both( even if most of the xbox titles I find in the wild are usually sports games).
Can't agree with that as i look through the game lists of both.

These are two underrated consoles bringing tons of great games (the former explaining the console gaming audience) and both for better or worse, changed the source of the companies behind them.

But which was better?

General / Will Amiibo beat Spyro Skylanders/DInfinity first year?
« on: January 30, 2015, 12:30:44 pm »
Nintendo released that 5.7 million Amiibos sold, which I'm assuming is to consumers. That's actually not really..Good when you look at it a certain way but this was the holiday season and it did come out within that time so the real question is if there is momentum. It does show however, that people are buying them outside of the WiiU/3DS market (excluding scalps) so I mean it won't do much to cover any financial holes but it shows that the market will expand a bit beyond the Nintendo ecosystem which COULD make Amiibos more of a player.

For comparison, Skylanders did 15 million in the holiday season as a new IP (well technically it was a Spyro game before it became a new Ip but ehh)

Infinity did 7 million or so in the first holiday season.

So the actual question is will it be able to beat Skylanders or/ad Disney infinity's first year?

Well looks look at the data we have.

Amiibo came out in November 21st and sold 5.7 million as of a few days ago. That will track technically as 3 months of sales, but of course we will say 2 months.

Amiibo has slowed down since than obviously, but i think it's possible to be around 6.5 million at start of march. If we keep a flat rate of 500,000 a month until November 1st, which is pretty optimistic, Amiibo could be at 10.2 million. I don't expect another big holiday rush but still good so 13.5 million by end of 2015.

Disney Infinity around feb sold 3 million starter packs, so that's 9 million figures alone. Throw in an estimate for other figures and I see around 12 million, as sales did slow and 2.0 was released in the holiday season, but that doesn't really matter since the 1st year ended in august, so I would think maybe at least another 500k starter packs, which would put it at 13.5 million, at other figures being sold at the time I can see 15 million in the first year. 17 being the highest since we don't know how many starter packs have really been since the 3 million announcement, but we do know sales slowed.

Skylanders sold 20 million in only 3 months so first year would probably be 40-45 million give or take.

I think Amiibo may have a chance against Infinity for the first year. Though it will have to remain at least around and frequently above 500k a month. Unless they actually double/sell 1 million the last holiday season.

Classic Video Games / Re: Best 'classic' PC to begin collecting for?...
« on: January 30, 2015, 11:45:50 am »
Regardless, the terminology "PC" has since only been used in conjunction with the previously-titled IBM Compatibles. It is a confusing definition indeed.

A parallel to draw (as an example) would be if Nintendo referred to the SNES as a "HGC" (Home Games Console). While all the other TV-consoles are HGC's, only one of them is actually an HGC (in the case of this theroetical example, the SNES), because Genesis and Atari games won't work in SNES's, even though effectively they're all HGC's anyway.
If you can wrap your head around that, then you can see why despite ideas to the contrary, there is actually only 1 PC; the aforementioned IBM Compatible and its successors (Made by HP, Acer, Asus, Dell etc).

Speaking of Acer didn't they say they would soon move all on Chrome Book in retail outside of certain online vendors?

It was probably about the time that Windows became popular that PC started referring to IBM computers only. After that, PC tended to refer to Window-compatible systems.

Back in the days of the Apple II and C64, there was another term; "IBM Compatible", which referred to IBM only programs.

Which is not true, the full name and the abrrev are too different things there are ads back then that say "Is Apple II better than PC" or "Will Atari kill PC" Or "Atari will try to make a PC clone to see how the market responds.)

That's actually not true at all, IBM pc's were the only ones to use the abbreviation of PC back then. And while some did use personal computer as a tag, others did not, and one of the main separating factors was the lack of using IBM PC's on a TV if not mistaken.

PC as the two letter abbrev was IBM's calling card, not only that, but there were computers like Atari 8-bit which were clearly aiming for the consumer market, Computers weren't mainstream as they were in the 90's, but this belief that computers were only for businesses is actually inaccurate, even in the U.S.

What is a classic PC? Are we talking just PC before the 90's? Or do you mean computers in general and not just PC's? If the latter Atari 8-bit.

Looking at the rest of the thread, looks like people forgot PC was not what computers were called if not by IBM or using their components back in the day, actually, wasn't even that long ago. (of course, MAC is really the only non-pc left, along with Chrome Books.)

Mortal Kombat Gold, nothing wrong with it, people were upset it wasn't a new game, but the game wasn't just a port of Mk4, it had better physics, graphics, additional characters, a better camera, and much better audio and voice.

Singularity is another one, i don't know what people were expecting another timeshift? (which was terrible btw) so not sure about that one either.

Megaman 8 is another, it's technically-objective wise, the best and most modern Megaman game we have gotten and will probably get for the foreseeable future despite it being basically more of the same game with a few coding and voice(debatable) issues (and also very easy)

Last would be Crash Wrath of Cortex, it was basically an expanded Crash 3 with more varied levels, better graphics and controls, and tons of bonuses. load times varied by system so should have never been the general concern, more of the same is nonsense, and I see no repetition either. At least not one some reviewers imply.

I loved Singularity.  The game was well laid-out, had some fun ways to kill enemies and warping time to construct/deconstruct things was pretty neat.  It was a solid, good game but nothing mind blowing.

Never said it was mind blowing, just saying that the amount of uh, dislike it got for the design, and the concept was just weird. Good controls, nice plot, good fun. I know some reviewers retracted some scores though. It did come out at the time of peaking Call of Duty fever (and clones) so that may be why it had so many mixed feelings.

Maybe we'll get a sequel since COD is on a downward death spiral.

I was never a fan of the Xbox. Their games might have been shinier, but the quality of titles was lacking for a person like myself that plays RPGs. Also, playing something like Soul Calibur II was a pain due to the controller being the size of a whopper. Nowadays, the only thing good about any form of Xbox is that Tales of Vesperia was released on one of them. It figures that the PlayStation 3 would get the superior version of it.

You mean Jrpgs right>?

The issue with this is that gamers (not even as much casuals as people think) are actually promoting these practices you don't like. I mean, it's like people complaining about Gamestop, but they don't start shopping in more numbers at better stores and still shop at Gamestop.

I'm pretty sure most of the regulars here use sources like Goodwill, Thrift Shops, online message boards & trading sites, and eBay. I don't think most of us frequent GameStop here.

You know good and well i was talking the majority of gamers. Not sure what context you were reading it as, people here don't like DLC that much either as much as others, but then there are others, the majority, of gamers who still do what they complain about. Which is why these practices are still useful. To publishers anyway.
