General / Re: Consoles you had the most and least fun collecting for?

Most fun for me:

NES
It's what I grew up on and fell in love with gaming on. It's hard to come across games I want that I don't already have anymore, though.

Least fun for me:
I've got two answers for this: First of all the Atari 2600. I just can't get into it. I respect it's history in video games and love the story behind Atari the company. But I just can't get into the console. It's games are too basic for me.

And my 2nd answer is because the spike in video game prices. Sega Saturn. It was already expensive to collect for, but manageable for a certain tier of games. But now, it's just crazy. The Sega Saturn has crossed the line into rich collector's territory. And this is a recent thing. I wish I had never sold my original collection when my first Saturn died. Because all I have are 2 games, right now.

Shenmue

No contest for me, I quite like the Dremcast but even to this day have not felt such an immersive setting as Yokoska in Shenmue 1. The attention to detail is just staggering to where each NPC is an established character with their own daily routine -  Also, they usually have something unique to say depending on your current story objective. It's the first time I've been so invested in a setting and want to seek out its little idiosyncrasies. Also that opening! I love every single frame about it, the cinematography is perfection.

I remember buying it on the promise of such an open-world. But then upon getting it being disappointed. I was really turned off by the quick-time event gameplay. And felt rushed by the day/night cycle when I just wanted to explore.

Though I do recognize what a leap forward it was for gaming. It laid the groundwork for games like GTA III and beyond.

It's not really my genre of game but I loved the first Ori.

Fantastic choice! Gorgeous game.

Resident Evil: Code Veronica is my favorite Dreamcast game. It's what drove me to buy a Dreamcast (back when it was still a Dreamcast exclusive).

Happy anniversary to the Sega Dreamcast, released 22 years ago on this day!

What was your all time favorite game on the system?

General / The Best Metroidvanias
« on: October 14, 2021, 01:53:20 pm »

I LOVE Metroidvanias! It all began with Super Metroid on the SNES, which I still consider the top of the class in Metroidvania. I love the sense of exploration and character progression. So I decided we needed a dedicated thread to this wonderful genre of video games.

What do you consider a Metroidvania? Are you one of those that only consider 2D games Metroidvanias? Or are you open to the idea of 3D games being included, such as King's Field or the Batman Arkham games? Do Resident Evil games count since there's a lot of map unlocking and backtracking (though not much in the sense of character progression)?

What are some of your favorite Metroidvanias?

My list of favorites:

-Super Metroid
-Metroid: Zero Mission
-Metroid: Fusion
-Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
-All the GBA and DS Castlevania games
-Cave Story
-Ori and the Blind Forest (both of these games are absolutely stunning looking)
-Ori and the Will O Wisps
-Shadow Complex Remastered (damn underrated game)
-Axion Verge
-King's Field 1-3 (some of my all-time favorites, as I'm sure some of you already know)
-The Batman Arkham Trilogy
-Shantae and the Pirate's Curse

I really feel like Shovel Knight has many of the Metroidvania qualities to it, and is one helluva game, but thought it didn't count since it is a level-by-level affair.

G4 officially relaunches 11/16/2021

Be sure to ask Dish Network to add G4 to their channel line-up.

Went through all of Marvel's "What If..." as I was waiting for it to finish up and just binge it all at once since it's not an ongoing story like the other series are.  Visually, I love the style, it sorta reminds me in some way to Iron Giant, just in CG and with more detailing and lighting to it.  Odd I know, but something about it feels familiar.  Makes for some great action though.

Generally I thought it was fun, I like alternate reality story stuff.  Writing was a mixed bag at times though.  The only one that I felt was rough, and was one I wanted to like more, was the Zombie one.  It was trying to be a zombie comedy, but tonally it didn't work at all.  It was too jokey, so any serious moments just didn't hit at all.  I know they couldn't do it like the comics, but there was a lot of room for improvement.  The ending was great though, essentially using all these alternate realities we had seen, to create a multiversal crossover, that's a fun way to bring it all together.  It's nothing amazing, but there's definite room for improvement.

I loved it. Felt just like the comic series. One-shot stories of alternate-realities, and I'm a sucker for alternate-reality and time travel type stories.

Though the party Thor episode was pretty stupid. And I felt like Thanos went down far too easily when Ultron faced him.

XBox One X is the most powerful console of that generation. From what I've read, it's actually more powerful than the XBox Series S. So if you have access to that console, that's probably gonna be the best bet for playing multiplatform games of that generation. Or even better yet, play them on an Xbox Series X (most powerful console on the market and fully backwards compatible with XBox One), but I get that not everyone has access to one of those.

That's a new game in the series, though, not a remake.

Oh. I thought it was a remake. I just remember the announcement, I never played it.

I usually don't mind Remasters or Ports because it is usually a game or game series that was popular and/or sold well in the past.  I don't see anyone
clamoring to get a Remaster of Shaq Fu, Superman 64 or Duke Nukem Forever.

I present to you Shaq-Fu Reborn:

It seems like the advance collection on switch release has all of you guys on a Castlevania buying frenzy right now

I already have the GBA physical releases and I have to imagine at some point in time Konami and LRG and gonna roll out a physical release.

Given the other two Castlevania compilations went physica via Limited Run I can almost say with 100% certainty that this one will two in a year or two. Like you I have them on GBA so I'll patiently wait.

Wait...other two? I thought there was just the original collection and the Advance collection. Did I miss one?

They did Requiem as well.

Thanks.
