I have a complete US Sega Master System and am aiming for a complete US NES and TurboGrafx-16/CD set.

My guess is ntsc with scart into component without a converter, which shouldn't work. Doesn't explain the audio issues though...

If its a japanese console you should just use a standard composite cable to attach to the tv.

Classic Video Games / Re: PCEngine/TG-16 in PAL regions?
« on: April 27, 2015, 04:33:56 pm »
The PAL TG16 should be able to play every US/PAL title released since they are the same thing(PAL unit just has different 50hz timings). With the PAL TG16 however there is a caveat to everything running at 50hz instead of 60hz. The games will run a tad bit slower and some may have glitches, slower BGM and slower SFX.

Since PAL TV's support 60hz natively you might be better off getting a NA TG16 to play the titles as intended. Or get a PCEngine and mod it to get the best of both worlds. PCEngine titles tend to be cheaper and the PCE has more variety that the NA TG16.

Ive heard of people modding an Xbox ... I have an original with one of those weird HD connectors that I never use. Maybe this would make the system worth using for me.

Is there a decent program set up for modding it? Im not very technical when it comes to stuff like that so would need some assistance!
I'm still pretty big into the Xbox modding scene so if you or anyone needs some tips or a point at some good resources shoot me a PM.

Modded Xbox is god tier as an all in one emulation machine.

Most Xbox hate is unfounded as it was a superior machine to the PS2 and GameCube in almost every way.

It is really easy to mod an Xbox. However, it also greatly shortens the lifespan of your Xbox. It just struggles a lot more reading all those different disc-formats. You could CLEARLY hear the difference after modding mine, and now mine is starting to go out. So weigh the good with the bad before deciding to mod it.

I just read this... Why would it shorten the lifespan of the machine? Dump the games to the HDD and put the discs on the shelf! My Xbox has a 200GB HDD with all of what I consider to be the must-haves on it.

What you are hearing is your laser sled and lens having to re-adjust for focus errors. It happens when using cheap media. This causes extra wear and tear on the sled assembly but not the laser itself.

I'm not really sure where the idea came from that burned media shortens the life of a laser, but im pretty sure its a myth.

I am part of the DC kickstarter and also am waiting on a reprint copy for Genesis. Double whammy for me I guess...

Not really worried about NOT getting it considering how long it took Watermelon to originally get the Genesis version out the door.

Also clean the rubber part of the spindle that helps hold the disc in place. If it gets too dirty the disc can slip when spinning and cause read issues.

This thread inspired me again to try and get the Acton Replay to work on my laptop running Vista, and after trying many different things with drivers, firmware updates, registry changes, running in various comparability modes, and simply cannot get this thing to work with my system, specially the memory card port that plugs in via USB. Wish I had Windows 7 Ultimate, I could just run it in XP Mode. Or I can go out and grab a legacy system running XP. It just sucks :/

Install VirtualBox and create an XP Virtual Machine. This is the easiest way to get compatibility.

Video Game Database Discussion / Re: Can we please lock some of the lists?!
« on: December 04, 2014, 12:50:13 am »
Maybe to stop new entries but not for edits. We can always improve the data we have.  :)
At the same time new homebrews come out every year for old systems and every so often new variations are discovered.

I agree... Just new entries and not edits...

For the one offs we should have a MOD or someone add them after its verified. And I'm only talking official lists not homebrew or unofficial releases. Those should be separate sub categories of the console and region type.

The current method of allowing anyone to enter anything anywhere doesn't really make sense once a list is complete. We might need a policy around verifying it before it can be locked, but it would save a lot of headaches.

Actually the SNES hardware can be (and is) used by a couple of games when plugged into the super game boy.

From Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Game_Boy

"It is also possible for Super Game Boy games to make use of the SNES hardware for extra effects, as demonstrated in Contra: The Alien Wars, Donkey Kong, Kirby's Dream Land 2, A Bug's Life, Animaniacs and Toy Story; these games had expanded sound when used with the Super Game Boy. Wario Blast, the Game Boy version of Killer Instinct, and several other titles even allowed the second Super NES controller to be used for two-player action, and the title screen changed to show that these games had a two-player option, rather than a connection status."

Ah didn't know that about the SGB. Thanks!

modern tv or old crt? This just start happening? try on a different tv set maybe? I know some LCD panels are more sensitive to weak A/V signals.

The Retron 5 uses RetroArch for its emulation cores and has zero real or clone hardware in it. It doesn't need to support Game Genies or flash carts because its just an emulator... They can do Game Genie and Game Shark in menu.

For those that do not know... The Super GameBoy is really a modified GameBoy designed to steal the power, video out and joypad inputs of the real SNES hardware and pump GB games directly to your screen.  The SNES is completely bypassed (except for color?)and the SGB handles everything.

So without any legit hardware to steal power or push video out it cannot work with something like a Retron 5.

Hardware and Tech / Re: Fixing RROD Xbox 360's( original fat models)
« on: December 02, 2014, 02:28:19 am »
I guess I was the few lucky people.
Ticking time bomb! Yours will die one day regardless of how good you've taken care of it.

I have personally touched over 100 RROD 360 consoles with my two hands. Anything you do to fix the issue short of reballing the GPU with lead based solder will fail again. Mileage will vary... I had a Xclamp replacement last me several years in one box, but last days to weeks in others. Depends on how badly the motherboard is warped and how bad the BGA is cracked.

Slim or nothing for me nowadays!
