I would like to get more Virtual Boy, Sega CD, and 32X games but so many of them have gone way up in price. I happened to find a Nuon at a Goodwill a few years ago but their is no chance in hell I'm getting a game for that thing with how prices are. All of those young adults nostalgic for the popular and beloved Nuon I guess :P

Hardware and Tech / Re: Game Boy Micro Questions
« on: May 31, 2022, 08:42:03 pm »
Update: I ended up getting a third party battery; a 750 mAh high capacity one by Makho since it seemed to have the best reviews. It was pretty easy to insert into the micro after shaving two tabs on the side off with a box cutter blade, but putting the battery cover back on was/is more of a pain than I was expecting. With the wires folded and the foam on the underside of the battery cover removed, the battery cover still doesn't want to fit quite as nicely as it did with the stock battery. I know it's because this replacement battery is about 1.5mm thicker, but woof. Anyway, the Micro turns on and seems to be working fine.

Still don't have a Micro link cable, but whatever. I'll just stick to one of the other GBA models for the rare times I need to link consoles.

Hardware and Tech / Re: Sega 32X not working with VA4 Genesis 2

Similar (it is EU MD not Genesis)

Interesting. Makes me wonder if anyone has ever gone through the trouble of testing the 32X on all variants of the Genesis/Mega Drive hardware.

Sega cd model 1 with a megadrive model 1 with the good audio (high definition grapics) would take up less space. mega cd 2 is really wide in comparison.
I mean...yeah I could certainly do that. I think I'd rather deal with the slightly crappier audio than spend god knows how much money on another Genesis and a model 1 Sega CD. I do like how the model 1 Sega CD looks though even though they seem to have more reliability issues.

Hardware and Tech / Sega 32X not working with VA4 Genesis 2
« on: May 19, 2022, 10:19:28 pm »
So earlier this month I got a Sega 32X at my local used game store and cleaned the crap out of it (outer shell, cartridge pins, and ribbon cables) and it works great...sort of. On my main Sega Genesis (a VA4 model 2 (a late model Genesis from October 1996)) with a Sega CD & 32X connected to it, Knuckles' Chaotix refuses to load after the title screen and even then, the title screen is full of garbled graphics. I made sure the cartridge slot of the Genesis was cleaned and still the same issue is happening. I also tested it with the Sega CD disconnected to no avail. When I switched to my second Sega Genesis (a VA7 original model (last revision of the original model Genesis)) the game works perfectly fine. So I'm wondering if their are any kind of compatibility issues with the 32X and certain models of the Genesis family. I know the 32X won't work with the Genesis 3 and Nomad, but I'm wondering if such issues exist within the model 2 Sega Genesis family. I know the VA4 model 2 consolidated the console's CPUs, sound chip, and whatnot onto a single chip, but I can't find anything about this particular model having compatibility issues with the 32X.

While the easiest solution would be to just use the Sega Genesis that works with the 32X, I'd prefer not to for two reasons:

1. That particular revision of the original model Genesis has infamously bad audio and while the model 2 Genesis consoles aren't much better, the VA3 and VA4 versions fix the audio issues a bit.

2. The original model Genesis is a bit longer than the model 2 Genesis and with my current gaming set up, the Genesis 2 and Sega CD are fitting perfectly in a cubby and switching Geneses would make it no longer.

Update: I remembered that I also have a second model 2 Genesis (this one being a VA1.8 ) and the game is working perfectly fine on that model too. Switching to this model 2 would solve the space issue I would have if I used the original model, but the audio issue would still be a thing. I know about the Triple Bypass mod for Sega Genesis consoles which I guess I could do to solve this problem, but I'm still curious about the weird compatibility issue I'm having with the VA4 model 2. I find it so strange.

General / Re: Games/Series you love, but also don't...

Mega Man X
This series feels like a roller coaster in terms of quality. I love X1 and X4, but all the other games range from okay to bad to me. The Classic series is fairly consistent in terms of quality which is why I find myself returning to that series more often, even though I like the gameplay of the X series more.

Pokemon
I'm down to play pretty much any mainline Pokemon game from gens 1-5, but once they went 3D, I (and I feel like a lot of fans going by what I've seen) they started to go downhill. It's to the point that I have zero interest in the gen 9 games and didn't even bother with any of the recent Pokemon game releases after Sword/Shield.

Mother/Earthbound
I really find this series to be charming and full of personality, but other than Mother 3, I really did not enjoy Earthbound Beginnings or Earthbound. I don't mind old RPGs at all; like I have no problem going back to the NES Dragon Warrior/Quest games and the original Pokemon games. I'm pretty sure it was the very limited inventory and difficulty spikes that kept me from enjoying the first two Mother games. Mother 3 also has a rather limited inventory, but I didn't notice it nearly as often and the game didn't have any major difficulty spikes that I can remember.

Got the new Kirby game the other day and am up to the third world. Been enjoying the game so far and have been trying to get all the Waddle-Dees in the levels. Other than that, I'm bouncing between other games like Picross S4 and Snowboard Kids Plus.

Classic Video Games / Re: What is the hardest RPG you Ever Completed?
« on: March 29, 2022, 07:40:37 pm »
The hardest RPG I've beaten is the NES version of Dragon Quest/Warrior II. The last areas of that games are brutal and the monsters always seem to target the weakest party member.

I have most of my retro consoles going to both a Sharp CRT TV and a Samsung HD TV thanks to the combined power of an S-Video amplifier and a RetroTink 2X-Mini. The consoles that only have RF and Composite though only have hooked up to the CRT TV. My Genesis is only hooked up to my HD TV through SCART to Component since the Composite video looks horrendous on that thing even on an old school TV.
