Most Rare -- VGC Edition
« on: November 04, 2022, 04:35:25 pm »
For whatever reason, I was clicking around and noticed that a few games in my collection had very few people here on VG Collect that also had it in their collection. That brought me to wonder what everyone else had that are active here on the forums. So...

Question: What are your top 10 least owned games that you have from the VG Collect community?

Here's mine:   Game Name - Platform - Number of People that have it in their collection on this site.
A Plague Tale: Requiem – PS5 – 3
Deliver Us the Moon – PS5 – 4
TMNT Shredder’s Revenge LRG – PS4 – 7
TMNT Cowabunga Collection – PS4 – 9
Horizon Forbidden West – PS5 – 16
Hunt: Showdown – PS4 – 11
The Lost World: JP – Game Gear – 25
Star Fighter – PS1 – 25
Double Dragon – Game Gear – 26
Stargate – Game Gear – 29

As expected, the least are physical PS5 games. The system is newer, still hard to buy and digital has taken over as majority version bought these days. Then my Game Gear collection took up most of the rest of the top 10.

How did your collection fare?

Oh, and no... I don't expect you to go through hundreds or thousands of games and check. Just guestimate. You probably have a good idea already.

Just looking through the physical games. I probably have so many digital games with few owners since a lot of people don't care to track their digital collection here. Some of my JP Pokemon carts would qualify too, but I won't count those either since I know a lot of people own these carts, just not the specific imprints I own.

Oddworld Stranger's Wrath Collector's Edition (LRG PS3) - 14
Oddworld Abe's Oddysee Collector's Edition (LRG PS3) - 11
Jak X Combat Racing (standing cover LRG PS4) - 9
Jak & Daxter The Precursor Legacy (silhouettes cover LRG PS4) - 7
Ape Escape 2 (JP PS2) - 7
Ape Escape 3 (JP PS2) - 5
Jak 3 (facing away cover LRG PS4) - 3
Ape Escape Pumped & Primed (JP PS2) - 3
Pac-Man World Re-Pac (PS4) - 1... just me!
Animal Crossing City Folk with Wii Speak Bundle (JP Wii) - 1. Just me again  :P

Mostly what I expected, LRG and JP games taking the lead. For regular NA games I think my "rarest" would have to be Duel Masters (PS2) with only 22 owners.

I'm not sure how to pull up a list of games sorted by amount of users that have them. And truth be told I've woefully neglected the cataloging of my collection on here for several years. I've come to use this site more to discuss games and also do the 52 games challenge than I have as a means of keeping track of what games I own. But if I had to guess what games I own that are ones few others on here own, I'd say it's probably a mix of my imports as well as my Dreamcast homebrews I've collected over the years.

It really helps when you collect stuff no one cares about, or bothers to differentiate and just chooses the first thing that kind of looks accurate:

2 Games in 1 Double Pack: Disney/Pixar The Incredibles / Finding Nemo: The Continuing Adventures (NA GBA, CA Variant) - 1
2 Games In 1: Finding Nemo + The Incredibles (EU GBA, NL Variant) - 1
Bratz: The Movie (AU GBA) - 1
Charlotte's Web (NA GBA, Movie Ticket Variant) - 1
Disney/Pixar Ratatouille (EU GBA, GR Variant) - 1
Game Boy Advance Video: Yu-Gi-Oh!: Yugi vs. Joey: Volume 1 (EU GBA, FR Variant) - 1
Harry Potter Collection (EU GBA, IT Variant) - 1
Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Prophecy (EU GBA, Merchandise Offer Variant) - 1
Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy (EU GBA, DK Variant) - 1
Magical Vacation (JP GBA, Value Selection Variant) - 1

A little unfair, but there you go. Also I added all of those to the database lol.

Now for a fairer regular NA only list, though they are probably just not as popular being shovelware:

4 Games on One Game Pak: SpongeBob SquarePants SuperSponge / Nicktoons Freeze Frame Frenzy / Fairly Oddparents Enter The Cleft / Rocket Power Zero Gravity Zone (NA GBA) - 7
Math Patrol: The Kleptoid Threat (NA GBA) - 7
Sportsman's Pack: Cabela's Big Game Hunter 2005 Adventures / Rapala Pro Fishing (NA GBA) - 7
Bratz: The Movie (NA GBA) - 6
David Beckham Soccer (NA GBA) - 6
Paws & Claws: Pet Vet (NA GBA) - 6
Word Safari: The Friendship Totems (NA GBA) - 6
Game Boy Advance Video: Shrek / Shark Tale (NA GBA) - 5
SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, The / Hey Arnold! The Movie / The Wild Thornberrys Movie / Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius (NA GBA) - 4
Strawberry Shortcake: Summertime Adventure - Special Edition (NA GBA) - 1

To be fair, these sorts of things are always a little inaccurate. Not everyone cares about having each game recorded down to the barcode variant and a lot of people won't bother intentionally collecting the vast majority of games in the first place.

I don't think there is a way, or at least I don't know it. I just scrolled through everything manually.

It's time to start catching up, otherwise it'll just keep piling up even more :P

Sorting things by console, my rarest for each system would be:

Game Boy: Disney's Mulan - 17 owners
Game Boy Color: Tie between Bob the Builder: Fix It Fun & Toy Story Racer - 15
GBA: Dead To Rights: 13 Owners
DS: Tie between Littlest Pet Shop 3: Biggest Stars: Blue Team & My Secret Diary - 3
3DS: Metal Fight Beyblade: 4D x Zero-G Ultimate Tournament [JP]- Just me
SNES: Nolan Ryan's Baseball - 37
N64: Mario Party 3 [JP] - 42
Gamecube: Evolution Skateboarding - 29
Wii: Bratz: The Movie - 11
Wii U: Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade - 53
Switch: Time Management Game Collection - 9
PS4: Bibi & Tina at the Horse Farm - 5
Xbox: Codename: Kids Next Door: Operation V.I.D.E.O.G.A.M.E. - 24
Xbox 360: NBA 2K13 - Dynasty Edition - Just Me
Xbox One: Paw Patrol: Mighty Pups Save Adventure Bay - Just Me

Biggest thing I noticed flipping through things is that users here by and large really tend to avoid games that are tie-ins to kids shows/movies and games targeting girls. While with me, I revel in them; It's just too amusing having them in my collection as well as on my gamertag. Having the full 1000G in Monster High: New Ghoul in School is a badge of honor, not shame.

This is an interesting topic idea, but the community largely does not have a thorough interest in keeping track of what they own. As the database has become more and more detailed with time, a lot of common variant items have slowly been added. Naturally, some users do not care about being this specific about what they track, so which items are being tracked by users shouldn't be a good indicator about what users actually own or be a good basis for what you yourself being uncommon or rare.

An example which I own some variant for is Silent Hill for PlayStation. The non-foil variant was the second published release. While I don't have any objective information about sales numbers, I have a feeling that more than 2 users own it.

Silent Hill
Silent Hill (silver cover)

With that said, here are a few items I own that don't have many other users attached to them. They're all but one variants in some capacity, which is probably going to be the most "rare" type of item any of our users own. Or, alternatively, since the majority of our users are based from NA, items from other regions are also likely to be a part of few collections.

Destiny 2 (Not for Resale) - 1
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Special Edition (Only at Walmart) - 1
Final Fantasy IX Limited Edition CD-ROM - 1
Gran Turismo (blue Hints disc) - 2
Heart&Slash [FR] - 1
Hohokum - Digitales - 2
Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (slipcover) - 1
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (50517A) - 4

and digital has taken over as majority version bought these days.

I don't think this is an issue that really affects our site as much as you're led to believe. Most of our users come to track physical items, since that was originally--and I believe still is--our emphasis. Using a PS5 item you own as an example, Horizon Forbidden West does not even have a PS5 NA digital entry within our database currently, whereas 16 users report owning the physical NA copy.

Years back when I first joined this site its collection cataloging feature was what drew me in. I religiously updated it over the years up until around 2019 or so when my desire to collect really fell off a cliff. While I still technically collect, I'm about a 10th of the collector I was 7-years, and a 20th of what I was 10+ years ago. It all got too expensive and too overcrowded with other collectors and resellers, which sucked most of the fun out of it for me. Luckily I had 95% of the retro games I wanted by this point so it was not a real loss for me other than lamenting the good times I used to have with it. Unfortunately with that loss of interest in collecting came a lack of motivation to update my collection on here. I actually have a pretty complete cataloging of my current collection on Pricecharting, but that is more for insurance purposes than to keep track of my stuff. As I said, i stick around for the forums, which sadly are pretty dead now, and the 52 games challenge. The challenge specifically reflects my transformation as more of a gamer than a collector; it's been very rewarding these last few years reducing my backlog. I may actually play all my games by the time I'm 70 at this rate :p

Some categories not even worth bothering with, such as PC.
Other underutilized sections like Macintosh that has a result like so
1 - Centipede
Or C64
1 - Cave of the Word Wizard

This topic is more interesting when you say, what is the rarest item that has quantity over 1

Then you get to things like Pit Stop on Atari 8-bit which shows 9 in collection.

A while back, I remember I could click on an item and the entry would show me how many collections it was in, along with how many are selling, how many want it, etc.
That information disappeared and now I don’t know how to see it. Whether I click on an item in my collection or browse, those numbers are missing. Am I just not doing it right?

I've got a bunch of playstation games where I am the single owner on this site, as I created the entries. I've made a point of intentionally seeking out new NA region items that haven't made it onto the site. Hoping to help future pundits track their collections and validate obscure items. I think it is great that this site tracks how many people have registered as owners of a particular item. It helps clear up a lot of speculation, assuming people are being honest, and you can also see what is sought after, by how many people have it on their want lists. Sometimes more people want and item than actually own it. Kinda cool to see where demand outstrips supply, and what is actually sought after compared to what is valuable, or both, when compared to the sales data.
