As odd as it sounds, RE5 is probably my second favorite in the series. I had been following the series since before the original started. I had been seeing interviews from the developer in magazines back in '95. When RE5 came out, it was a perfect balance of suspense and action. It also added the ability to play co-op with a friend. The controls were spot on. Last but not least, it FINALLY completed the Chris vs Wesker story arc that had started in the very first game. 1996-2009 is a long time to wait for a story arc to conclude. I do wish that the PS3's collector's edition was better than what we got though.

It may not have aged well, but it was a landmark in the history of gaming and extremely popular at the time. I know I played the hell out of it, and it deserves a place on this list.

Can’t say I agree with RE5, which I hated so much I only played it once and never again, but I’m sure some won’t agree with my pick, so it’s all fair ;D

While I preferred the second Dino Crisis, it's not what one could count as survival horror anymore. It went so far to the action side that there wasn't anything really scary about it at all. It was an occasional jump scare (maybe) from a raptor or running from the T-Rex, but it wasn't horror by any stretch of the imagination.

That brings me to the first Dino Crisis. The game that started it for me. It's essentially Resident Evil with dinosaurs if you haven't played it, but it's really a fantastic game and the first was actually a bit scary at times. At minimum suspenseful. I truly hope that Capcom gets off their rear and makes a reboot or remake in the vein of the more recent RE remake games.

20. Silent Hill

Often overlooked due to Silent Hill 2 but the original is still very compelling!

22. Dead Space
Sorry Already put that forward (no.9) - great game though!

23. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories

Very overlooked! I sort of wish it didn't have SH1 reboot elements to it because beyond the opening premise the game is very unique. I loved how the psychiatrist changed the following chapters to give the player a unique experience.

D'oh!  Dead Space 2, then.

Also, are we considering Castlevania and Doom as horror?

I was thinking the same thing reading all the replies

Technically Doom 3 is a first person shooter, but it has all the elements of a horror video game and since the topic says horror games I also figure it would fit into this category
