The Game Awards 2024
« on: December 12, 2024, 07:35:22 pm »
Don't care about the awards, but there's usually good game announcements.

Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound - Strong start with this, classic pixel art styled sidescrolling hack and slash from the team behind Blasphemous.
Dave the Diver: In The Jungle - Expansion? Sequel? Not sure exactly, but more Dave the Diver is cool, I really enjoyed it.
Thick As Thieves - From Warren Specter, a multiplayer thievery game where I think you compete to steal an item while dealing with other thieves.
Shadow Labryinth - Oh god, they turned that super weird Secret Level episode of Pac-Man into a dark metroidvania.  So dumb lol The game could be fine, but what a weird thing to do.
Witcher 4 - I just hope this game has really overhauled combat, I wanted to like Witcher 3, there's a lot of good there, but the combat was not particularly well done.
Elden Ring: Nightreign - Some sort of...Elden Ring multiplayer game coming out next year.  I had an inkling it could be due to the encroaching BR-styled circle they showed, but it looks like it's built around a co-op experience rather than I think a PVP setup, fighting enemies and bosses together, even including previous bosses from other games as they showed the Nameless King from DS3.  I'm kinda done with Elden Ring after not really liking the DLC, but curious to see what this is.  Never cared about the multiplayer before in their games, but could be kinda interesting.  This is also a standalone game, it's not an expansion or update.

Game from the creator of ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, The Last Guardian.  Going for a scifi vibe instead of the usual fantasy setup, involves something with large machines of some sort. No name yet.

The Outer Worlds 2 - I really hope this game is a huge leap forward from the first game, the characters and such were good, but I thought the gear, looting, and exploration was lacking compared to something like Fallout.  Out next year.
Split Fiction - New co-op game from It Takes Two devs.  Idea is a scifi VR experience jumping around futuristic and fantasy settings.
Steel Hunters - Peoples spirits are put into giant mechs to battle.  From the Wargaming team, PvPvE game with 5 teams of 2.  I'm mildly interested.  I almost thought this was another mech shooter game I played a test for earlier, but I think that was a little more...anime-esque I think.  I can't remember the name of that one now.
Borderlands 4 - Not sure if I'm interested in this or not, but I'll keep an eye out, they kinda need to do a lot to get me excited again.
Tekken 8 - Clive from Final Fantasy 16 is a new character, which isn't surprising since Noctis was Tekken 7.  They gotta do Tifa one of these days lol
Mecha Break - This was the game I was thinking of before that I play tested lol It was kinda fun, but I'm a little more interested in Steel Hunters over this as while I love anime mecha, I also like abit more rough and tumble mecha designs.  Spring 2025.
Virtua Fighter - New VF game, special presentation tonight for it in a couple hours.
Project Century - Seems like a Yakuza styled action, set in 1915 Japan, very interested in that setting.
Turok Origins - Co-op third person shooter.
Helldivers 2 - Finally getting the new aliens faction that I think have been teased for awhile.  New update out now.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword - 2026 release

This Berserker Kazahn trailer has weirdly great visuals and action, but terrible audio design lol

Stage Fright - 2 player co-op from Overcooked devs.
Game of Thrones: Kingroad - Action adventure game out in 2025.
Double Dragon: Revive - Oct 23 2025 release
Screamer- Racing game of some sort.  Odd mixture of CG visuals with almost anime or at least cartoon characters for the trailer, but I'm somewhat interested in new arcade racing games.
Den of Wolves - Cyberpunk Payday pretty much.
Sonic Racing: Crossworlds - If this is more of a return to the Sonic All-Stars Racing games, I'm super on board with that.
Okami 2 - Hideki Kamiya is back with a new studio "Clovers" with Capcom to make the sequel.  This is pretty cool.
Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet - Naughty Dog is finally working on something new for the first time in like a decade I think, super 80's inspired scifi game, might be an action game due to the final tease of the trailer.

I think Okami 2 might've been the only big "Oh that's an awesome surprise" for me at this show, as I never expected to see it return, but there was a very decent spread of games shown for sure. Decent show this time, felt better put together than last time, like there were a few small bits going on with the Muppets some celebrity stuff, but not nearly as bad as last time and they kept up the pace with awards and reveals pretty steady.

Honestly surprised that Astro Bot won, and that's not meant negatively, but just happy to see a nice charming platformer experience win it and we kinda emphasize to Sony that "Hey, this is what Playstation players want".

I liked dave the diver.  A lake/swamp setting with alligators and frogs ect. Would be cool. (Guessing thats what jungle would entail)

Oh Screamer is a reimagining of an old 1995 racing game, but leaning heavily into 80's/90's anime and manga.  Kinda interesting to see, I'm on board for a cool arcade racer.

Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound really got my attention and since Sega is bringing back Virtua Fighter, it made me wish they'd do something with Shinobi as well...

Very clear that woke feminists have taken over the industry. That's all I'll say on that regardless of replies to it.

Zero interest in the new Naughty Dog game. Not just because of the main character but because it very much looks like a ripoff of Guardians of the Galaxy mixed with Star Wars.

Onimusha has my attention but that 2026 release date is far away that it may as well be a PS6 launch title.

The interesting looking robot game by the ICO creators also has my attention, but knowing them, it'll be a PS7 game.

Turok is a maybe. I liked what the gameplay seemed to be and perhaps it has co-op?

Witcher 4 will be good but if I'm playing Witcher, I want to be Geralt, not Ciri. I like her character just fine but she's not the White Wolf.

I did not watch the event live but watched trailers as they were upload to various channels in likely a different order than they were originally revealed. For a while, it seemed like a pretty uneventful showcase, but there proved to be a good amount of announcements that interested me.

Elden Ring: Nightreign: The more content this game is given, the less inclined I become to play it. For the worse, the Nightreign content trailer makes it seem like it's a completely different game than the base campaign in terms of both gameplay and tone. Of course, this is a multiplayer experience so obviously it's far removed from traditional content FromSoftware is known for that I can remember across any of their action-RPG titles, but it was presented awfully.

Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet: Knowing that this is being developed by Naughty Dog, I'm sure it'll be great. Based on the little gameplay shown, I doubt it's something I'd want to play, though.

Mafia: The Old Country: This project was announced a few months ago so isn't a surprise to me, but seeing more of this project's dark tone was striking. I've never played a Mafia game—and probably won't, knowing me—but this looks great.

Ōkami Sequel: To date, Ōkami is the worst game I've ever played to completion in some respects which I know is quite the opinion, so I'm interested in what a sequel will look like.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword: It's interesting to see Capcom bring back another franchise besides Resident Evil, but I'm not sure how much this trailer succeeds in setting the game apart from others similar to it.

Project Century: This is my personal highlight of the show. I'm curious to find out if this has ties to the Like a Dragon series or if it's a new IP with darker themes. Very little media covers Japan during the Taishou era which I think is an exciting time visually, so I'm greatly looking forward to play this. Even if this releases next year, though, I know it'll be a long while before I finally catch up to playing it.

Solata 2: I've not ever heard of the original game before, but this looks like fun. It probably won't be as good as Baldur's Gate III, but similar experiences to it seem to be in-demand now.

Split Fiction: I have high expectations for this. I'm sure I'll be playing this sooner than later once it releases. The clear contrast between level design looks fun.

Stage Fright: Compared to most game trailers, the one presented was creative and memorable. It's good to see 2-player couch co-op return once more.

Untitled GenDesign Game: I've enjoyed Fumito Ueda's previous games which all can be characterized by their dark fantasy setting, but it seems like Ueda is departing from those themes which is perfectly fine because no creator should feel bound to making the same types of experiences. Apparently this project and its general themes have been known about for some time though are new to me.

Virtua Fighter: Seeing Ryuu ga Gotoku attached to this franchise revival is quite the surprise.

The Witcher IV: The cinematic trailer shown looks great, and I'm sure the gameplay will echo that. One shot in particular looked to me as if it were filmed.

Very clear that woke feminists have taken over the industry.

Yeah, the new trailers shown at the event for Dave the Diver: In the Jungle, Double Dragon: Revive, Dying Light: The Beast, Mafia: The Old Country, Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Project Century, Sid Meier's Civilization VII, and Tekken 8 really showcase this irrational fear. Oh, wait.... Anyway, moving on.

The games that got me the most excited:

-New Ninja Gaiden game looks SOOOO good!
-I literally said, "No freakin way!" when new Virtua Fighter game trailer was shown, probably the game I'm most excited for
-New Onimusha game looks excellent. It reminded me that I need to play the old ones lol
-New Okami has me interested, but again need to play the original
-New game by Shadow of the Colossus/Ico dev had me interested

Overall, this may have been my favorite game awards from an entertainment point of view. I also feel like modern games are starting to become slightly more appealing looking again, but still have a long way to go before they reach 2015 levels and before again. I think they should have ended the show with the Witcher 4 trailer rather than Intergalactic, but that'ds just my opinion.

IDK, I feel like the industry is finally moving past this. I noticed a lot less woke slop being shown off this year compared to the previous 3 or 4 at TGA, E3, or Summer Game Fest. Of course Intergalactic had to be the last trailer which looks like the most blatantly unaware, tone deaf woke game they showed off all night. The Youtube comments for it are hilarious btw. But I feel like the failure of Concord, Forspoken, SW Outlaws, and other games of that ilk have been all the proof most devs need to show that woke is no longer profitable, if it ever was at all. It's starting to feel like games are being made for entertainment again rather than to push an agenda.

As bikingjahuty mentioned.  Here are some grails from the comments of intergalactic trailer. For lollygags and giggles.

"The dog isnt naughty anymore"

"PS5 Pro abandons physical media at launch but the future has physical CDs"

"I feel like Will Smith will slap me if I make fun of her"

"They should have called this game. The last from us"

And my personal favorite.

"From the studio that brought you Jak and Daxter, Crash Bandicoot and more...  yeah and how many of those people still work there?"

Overall I dont hate intergalactics trailer as much as some. But I do get the distain from others.

My favorite moment of the night was when Kratos VA dragging call of duty like a wounded Gazelle. And the devs visibily getting mad over it lol. That man is a majestic beast of a human lol.

Fine. Here's why I'm against it, and it has nothing to do with fear. It's because the vast majority of content being created stars a poc female. That in and of itself isn't even the issue. The issue is that any time a guy tries to point out the now flooded market, people like yourself start bashing us in any way possible. It ranges from your take of, I'm afraid of something, to being called a racist or a homophob or insert slur here. It's usually a pile on of condescending jerks that don't know how to have polite conversation anymore (thanks internet and absent parenting), and frankly, I'm sick of it and will now push back 10x harder because of the constant disgusting displays people give when all I'm doing is asking a question.

Given those thousands of interactions over the last decade, I will no longer support products that I perceive as woke. Hell, this game may not end up being woke at all, but the interactions from past products killed the sale for me.
