As a matter of fact, almost 2 years ago now I bought a copy of Dual Hearts complete & in really good shape that included a copy of Jak & Daxter (that I didn't need, but whatever) for $12 + $3 shipping off of eBay. $40 now??? That IS nuts.

Luckily I have most of the really expensive ones I wanted for it now, except for RoR which I honestly won't even bother with unless I stumble across it for cheap in the wild. At least, I think - who knows, maybe some of the ones on my wish list have skyrocketed since I last checked them. :-\

It can surprise you how quickly it will happen. Less than six months ago, Dual Hearts was selling from about $12 - $18. I think the fascination with Rule of Rose is what has inspired this witch hunt for 'rare and desirable' PS2 games, and scalpers hoping to find the next one that will break $100 and actually have people paying for it. Evidently Dual Hearts has been selling steadily at around $35 - $40 for some months. Makes you wonder sometimes if it's all artificial. People selling AND buying their own games to drive up the interest and costs on some of them. What would stop someone from doing just that?

Is this happening?

I don't have too many more PS2 games to get, but there are a few I held off last year and now they're double, if not triple what I remembered. Like, when did Dual Hearts become a $40 game? Last I checked it was like $15 on average. When Did Jade Cocoon 2 become a $25 game? It used to be like $5 - $8.

You might not see a full-on spike occuring, but I've noticed across many platforms lately not just PS2, there seems to be a scalping trend going on with obscure titles. Not really rare games, but games that are overlooked / obscure and look solid, are becoming the target of scalping. Doesn't seem to require any sort of demand for them, they're just sort picked at random - "this is worth a lot because most people haven't ever heard of it", I guess.

Gah, you can't escape this sort of thing with any platform nowadays. Seems like folks will pay about anything for a game, if it was $5 yesterday they'd buy it and if it's $50 the day after, they'd still buy it. At such a rate it'll always be a seller's market.
Everything except microsoft consoles it seems.

Some of the horror themed games on Xbox have gone up, as the entire genre seems to be way more collectible now than it was a few years ago.

Found myself back at the flea markets again this year. Managed to grab a few.

Raw Danger - PS2
Ape Escape 3 - PS2
Sly Cooper - PS2
Judge Dredd - PS1
Tiger-Heli - NES
The Sims 3 LateNight - PC

Then at GameStop I could not resist the new Wii U controllers. I don't know what exactly makes them "fight sticks", but I like them for collecting purposes. I got the Yoshi one. It seems like the Wario one is the hardest to find.

Now that you say that, I don't recall seeing the Wario one at any of the Gamestops I've been to recently. My favorite is the Samus one, I may have to get it - but I don't know that I'd get them all.

I like the Samus one too, I struggled between that one and Yoshi.  At first I thought maybe I'll just get those two, but now the crazy part of my brain is thinking "collect them all".

I don't mind, but what actually scares me is knowing how they will probably throw away so many retro boxes and manuals people trade-in because they don't keep that stuff on their shelves. Hopefully most people won't trade in pristine retro stuff to them, chucking out everything but the cart and slapping their price tag sticker over a nice label, that would be sad.

Here are some more SNES ones I made that I thought looked cool, so I wanted to share them.

Can you do this for Game Boy titles?

Yes, it just depends on which games.

Here is an example of GB.

Here is my first Sega CD box, if anyone is interested in these. I still need to tweak it some, also I realize this example has a misprint on it.

For those of you who collect Sega CD, I am in the experimental phase of building Sega CD boxes (for the original titles that came in a paper box). I should have my results in tonight. I'll post a pic of one if all goes well.

Can you do Super Famicom boxes aswell? :)

Right now we're sticking to North American stuff.

These are amazing! Do you have a website or eBay account you are selling them on?

No website, but I can post any requests on eBay if you would prefer that. Of course, I'm more than happy to sell some of these things right here on the forums.  ;D

UPDATE:

I wanted to bump this again in order to plug our website, since it is somewhat off of the ground now. On the site you can find a pretty decent selection of boxes, but if you don't see something you'd like to have, we will take requests. Generally we prefer to stick NTSC region products, we don't do Famicom or Super Famicom right now. But if it's NTSC there's a good chance we can make it for you. Basically once a game is requested, it becomes added to our catalog. We just don't have pics of the ones we haven't actually made yet. Presently we do NES, SNES, N64, Gameboy/Color/GBA. We are looking to expand into more platforms eventually, like Sega 32x, Sega CD, Genesis, and possibly more later on.

Again, we mark our boxes as repro on the backs, and we do put a lot of care and attention to detail into these. Many hours spent on Photoshop and we literally hand make every single one that someone buys per order. We include cartridge trays and foam blocks inside as well. We ship FREE to anywhere in the USA, no minimum order. As of right now, no international orders are accepted, and Canadian orders have to be negotiated due to crazy shipping costs over the boarders. Basically we would need to get a shipping quote first, and then work something out if you are in Canada and are interested.

So guys if you're curious, head on over to www.boxmygames.com and let me know what you think!

---

I thought I would try and plug this in case anyone was interested. I am currently up and ready with my hand made game boxes, that I've been working on for months. The boxes are like the originals, except these are made on a sturdy fine art paper, they also have a stamp of our project name in place of the bar code. The look and feel is pretty good, I think. They include inserts just as the originals did, for NES that is a Styrofoam block, and for SNES it is a cartridge tray. No manuals. Well, not yet anyways.

Almost any game can be made. Here are some examples of what we can do -

If anyone here is interested, PM me. Trying to get $13 shipped on each, there is actually a good bit of work and materials that go into hand making each one. And well, that's still better than what a lot of boxes go for. Since these are made on request, I will start building them after a buyer sends payment, and will ship as soon as it is done. I prefer/accept PayPal. Also, at this time I'd rather not ship over seas, and these are NA versions only.

Been down out and out lately. Something triggered a sudden bout of depression, and excessive rumination. :(  When you are in this state of mind, nothing makes sense. Game collecting seems silly, in a what are you doing with your life? kind of way. Just haven't been much for games lately. Even still, not selling - these copies will perish with me. Although I am as always pennyless, and desperately trying to save up for a much needed car. Games are lower priority.

I've contemplated trimming the fat in my wishlist and collection goals by a lot, since I've lost drive. One thing I'm sure of, I'm throwing in the towel on collecting as far as new games, with the exception of first party Nintendo. Because I've come to the conclusion that I really don't have any interest in modern (current) games, I feel like modern games have outgrown me. Besides, I have more than enough games for one lifetime as it is.

I know games/collecting shouldn't feel like any sort of obligation, but it does. I've invested so much into this stuff, and I want to "finish" it in a way that makes sense to me. You know? I don't want to just quit, but I do have this yearning to sort-of move on / close a chapter. This stuff is great, but it doesn't define me. It's not what I was meant to spend all my time on Earth doing, and to be honest for a long time it has seemed that way.

Sorry to be a total buzz kill, my mind is just zapped right now. Has been for several weeks. Trying to get back into a pattern of doing more than lying around, trying to figure out what it is I'm "supposed to do".  :-\

Boo for disc only reprints! What's the point? Which marketing genius came to that conclusion? Yeah, people who want these rare and valuable games will be happy to buy just a disc! Psshh.
