Off Topic / Re: Old Devices You Would Get Again...
« on: November 25, 2018, 02:36:13 am »
I've got a couple of older phones (htc one m8/lgv20) that i use primarily for better music quality/hosting parts of my music library, and especially the latter has an amazing camera/video record capabilities compared to my regular daily driver phone (moto g5+), both rooted and I did pick up an older thinkpad t60 laptop recently mostly out of curiousity/ experimenting with lightweight linux os's.

Besides that, most of the older stuff I would want is either out of my price range, or can be integrated w/ current devices that I already have (besides missing the aux cable port in my car :(

I really couldn't care less about "ethics" in grabbing ISO's and ROM's of games since it has introduced me to a ton of games I wouldn't have played ( and some purchased) due to the amount of cost thrown in ( since stuff like a full blown arcade cabinet could require a ton of money especially for part maintenance like the crt screen, capicators, etc. ).

In addition,  the recent Emu paradise debacle have only shown me that a sizable amount of game companies don't care too much about game preservation as a whole, but only care about getting people to rebuy their old popular games again and again ( especially at the expense of other titles that don't even fall under their jurisdiction). Along with the fact that some high-demand games don't have any chance of getting a remake due to lost source code, so i'd rather be able to play it in a emu vs spending $600-700 on the "real thing".

General / Re: Upcoming 2018 games I'm interested in buying list

I'm kinda debating on grabbing Ultimate generations on switch or world on pc since while the former has a ton of monster variety, the latter has some really nice 4k & framerate scaling, in addition to some of the enviornments. Other two on my list are smash bros ultimate and metal wolf chaos XD ( maybe la mulana 2 as well).

Sometimes I buy food.

Why is this even a thread?
So that’s a no then?
Since you glossed over my question, I'll ask again: What's the point of this thread?

Basically, Steam puts a bunch of stuff on sale for 2 weeks, and highlights some each day.

For some good deals, fanatical has some really good deals with their summer sale, especially with their promo code.

Your ideals for what you want game hunting to be in 2018 are pretty unrealistic, even as someone else mentioned a possible aid (emus) that would help with getting to experience games that'd cost an arm and a leg normally.

If you don't want to spend a bunch of money on stuff now, then try playing a game from your library and see how you like it.

I have an ongoing list of games I'm on the lookout for, some are incredibly rare and some are very common. I buy what sounds interesting and fun to me regardless of rarity. Ironically, I've found that most rare games or games that re considered "hidden gems" are vastly inferior to similar games that sold in the millions. I feel like if a rare game is even remotely fun this gives collectors ammo to over hype a game until its price skyrockets. I've seen this happen countless times.

Yet there are also plenty of examples of these games being equal or superior than other cheaper alternatives of certain genre's.

On topic

I never keep lists of rare games It's not really fun it gives the need to hunt for certain titles wich you might probably never get unless your willing to spend.
"plenty" is definitely a stretch, but yes, there are some.

if buy rare you mean at the very least the 50+ range for allot of genre's there are not that many cheap alternatives unless your including compilations modern releases for ps4 etc.

run & gun, shoot em ups action platfomers are some genre's where the best games reside in that expensive range , allot of the cheaper titles with a few exceptions aren't that great or the options are just bare bones.

I agree that in the normal platform games where mario and sonic reside and in the survival horror genre that indeed those common games is the stuff where it's at to name some examples but plenty of genre's where the cheap titles aren't the best not to mention that if were talking about 150 + value games there aren't that many to begin with and from my experience is a solid % wich at least is equal if not better than more common alternatives.

Look at snes and sega plenty of genre's where the best games reside in the more rare or sought after expensive titles. If your going for that 30 $ or less list There are no winners in there except for some mascot games like sonic & mario and some of the common arcade games wich are good but not the best a bit exaterated but were talking about the best games for certain genre's. The choices are limited in my opinion if were talking about the best games for the system.

Everyone has there opinion but from my experience I can't agree that there are only some games that are better than ones that are common plenty of genre's that just don't deliver.

I'm not saying that if a game is slightly better it justifies a sometimes 10 times higher price but if were talking about the best games there is a very solid amount of the rare games wich are in my opinion among the top especially in the 16 bit and 32 bit era. Name me an rpg in that era wich are among the best wich are affordable I'm pretty sure the more affordable ones where the ones with less quality excluding ps1.

And speaking of common games being better than rare games, say the saturn are there actually any cheap good games I mean seriously  :o Your not going to tell me that on the saturn the best games are the common ones.

Clock work night, panzer dragoon maybe, but your going to tell me that the saturn has common games wich are superior over the sought after rare ones, for saturn  the common library does not even stand a chance the way I see it I must be missing something the more interesting games are in the more expensive price range if I am not mistaken.
On the saturn, rayforce is not only one of the cheapest shmups ( around $30), but also one of the best on the system w/ the tate mode. Same goes for Darius Gaiden.

You usually get to jump right into the game w/o worrying much about a narrative, along with score based gameplay for a large amount of titles.

Wouldn't be worth it to upgrade to 4k at my range ( since what I want with true 4k @ 60fps can only be done w/ reg 1080s/ 1080s Ti and a 120 hz monitor to display at that is pretty expensive). Maybe in like 5 years or so.

Modern Video Games / Re: E3 2018: Sony

Sony's E3 2018 Showcase: A-

Well that was a lot cooler than I expected! Almost everything interested me, some certainly more than others. I felt that insane E3 hype and excitement for two games, Resident Evil 2 and Ghost of Tsushima. Resident Evil 2 had me yelling in excitement and fully freakin out. Ghost of Tsushima gave me chills and awes as I watched the absolutely awesome gameplay and beautiful graphics! These two games alone had me freaking out more than any other game announcement so far, even Doom Eternity. When the dust settles we'll see if which game I'll be most hyped for, but both of these games were just astoundingly cool reveals!

I did think Last of Us: Part 2 looks good, but it isn't a day one purchase. I thought the first game was great, but I don't have the same reverence for it that many other fans do. My ears perked up also when they announced Nioh 2, but I admittedly still need to play the first one before I can get properly hyped for it.

If I were into super heroes more and Spiderman I'd be ultra hyped for it, but honestly I have no interest in playing it. Death Stranding looks like it's so far up its own ass, and I can't imagine it would be getting the attention and hype it has if Kojima wasn't behind it. The new trailer had me roll my eyes and how pretentious it looked, but perhaps when more concrete info comes out on it I'll change my tone towards it. The only game that they showed that flat out turned me off was the one done by the creator of Rick and Morty.

I'm also not a big fan of the showcase format that Sony has used the past two years. I really miss the conference format, and the changing venue gimmick was incredibly unnecessary and stupid. Luckily the games shown off were really top notch overall and I feel pretty good about the conference overall. Let's see if Nintendo de-throwns Sony as the best E3 conference of 2018.
Dude, they showed only a handful of games and ...

You said Last of Us isn't a day one purchase, you'd need to play Nioh 1 before getting hyped for a sequel, you have no interest in Spiderman, Death Stranding shouldn't get any attention or hype it's all Kojima and the Rick and Morty game turned you off.

AND YET, you said almost everything interested you and gave it the best rating of every conference.

I mean, really now, and then saying you wouldn't pay more than $60 for an xbox one.

I think you have some serious confirmation bias and false love of a product you bought for justification.

I gave the MS conference a B+ so I'm not sure why I'm so heavily biased towards Sony. I do like Sony consoles more due to their exclusives and I've also preferred Sony consoles for multiplats since gen 6, but I am by no means a XBOX or Microsoft hater. I feel like the three main system sellers on XBOX are Halo, Gears, and Fortza, which aside from Halo I don't really care for the other two. There are definitely smaller exclusives, but I feel like those three games are a big reason why some people chose to buy an XBOX instead of a PS4.

Given that, it's hard for me to justify why MS really helped themselves during their conference, or at least appeal to people outside the hardcore fans of those series' when almost all the games thy showed off were either multiplats or just console exclusives, meaning I could get them on Steam if I wanted to. I'm not discounting the massive amount of games they showed off, that definitely made their conference awesome, but the conference did very little to sell more XBONEs to people who didn't already have one. I certainly have no more desire to own an XBONE after watching that conference and I doubt many others do either.

On the other hand, Sony showed less games, but most of their games they showed are confirmed exclusives. Therefore Sony definitely did a good job of getting others on the hype train for these titles, effectively selling more PS4s. Obviously this is an accurate analysis since PS4 continues to outsell the XBONE like crazy, as does the Switch which also has a lot of exclusives you can't find on other consoles. Again, I am not bashing the XBOX or Microsoft, simply telling you why I gave them the grades I did. Nearly all of my excitement I had during the MS conference was regarding games I could buy for my PS4, which does not help MS at all, but I am thankful to them for premiering those games on their stage.

Hopefully that explains why I ranked Sony higher despite my own personal interest in only a few games at the Sony conference.

I think the main problem with sony's conference is that so many of those games aren't anywhere close to being released and many of which didn't even get release dates.   Xbox had plenty of exclusives outside of those 3 you mentioned.   Like Crack Down 3 and The new Ori game to mention a few.  Combine those with a New Halo, Forza and Gears.  All 3 heavy hitters.  I think even for a Sony fan, Xbox had a much better night.  :)

I do think Xbox's E3 will certainly sell consoles.  As a standard one owner, I feel dirty not having a One X to capatalize on 60 fps at 4k quality.  It's truly become an unavoidable asset for Xbox Owners over Sony.  The games simply look amazing.  I know many PS4 fan friends of mine getting a One this black friday because of the past few days alone.   They did a great job selling us the One X or One in general.  I was preying Sony showed me a TLOU2 release,  or something special to lure me into buying a PS4,  but yet again I wait for the home run as god of war isn't my bag of chips.

I think your initial comment came off as pandering to sony for the sake of them being your favorite console. Especially the "I wouldn't pay more than 60 dollars for an Xbox One" statement lol.   It seemed like you had more positives tooken away from Xbox but still gave them a slightly worst rating just for being Xbox.   But your elaboration definitely helps understand what you meant a bit.  :)
It certainly doesn't help that 90% of Microsoft's exclusives are ported to PC, so most people are going to look elsewhere for either exclusives that are one platform, or a multiplatform title that runs well on base consoles ( since sales on the Pro and X haven't been as good as expected).

General / Re: Has gaming gotten better on worse in your opinion?
« on: June 12, 2018, 03:09:23 am »
Worse, due to the fact that the industry has fallen victim to the success of appealing to such a large audience. This forces companies to constantly pursue a target genre of games ( which has been noted as far back as fighters from early 90s- mid 90s,) which has led to less diversity in game studios over time as many of them had to either move to other genres to attain sales, downscale, or go bankrupt. Single-player is definitely being seen as less of a necessity compared to pushing multiplayer online (complete with your loot boxes and extra skins for an additional price)!

The only thing that really keeps me invested is seeing what small indie studios can do, since they're more open to  experimenting on game ideas, especially in genres that have been left for dead like shmups, and can sometimes deliver some fantastic results. Besides that, I've been spending more time than ever playing stuff made 25-30 years ago ( with the occasional game like odyssey on switch) since there's plenty of retro stuff out there that'll take a lifetime to beat.
