Modern Video Games / Re: 2020 Games
« on: March 10, 2020, 07:00:07 pm »
Basically, there are three games I'm looking forward to play this year:

- Resident Evil 3
- Panzer Dragoon
- Streets of Rage 4

However, as always, I'll only be purchasing the latter 2 titles when (and if) they receive a physical release...

Buy them and don't play them? Yeah ok you got me.

Off Topic / Re: Anyone Played Golf Or Mini Golf In Real Life Before?
« on: February 23, 2020, 06:05:06 pm »
I've never played real golf in my life.
Here in Japan, however, people (especially older men) absolutely love it, so they have something I've never seen anywhere else in the world: golf driving ranges (usually called gorufu renshuujo or uchippanashi) where you can pay just to hit the ball and practice your swing. These places are usually crowded around 18h to 21h when salarymen stop there to (I guess) relieve some stress from work before going back home.
I've tried it sometimes with some friends who really dig into the sport and, as someone who has played baseball for most of his life, I can say that I find the technique needed to hit that little ball from the ground and make it go in the direction you want it to is much harder than hitting a baseball...

I am very thankful VGCollect exists!
Apart from it being a very user friendly online video game database and helping me in keeping track of my collection, the forum and its members are overall great!

I used to be part of some forums and Facebook groups for motorcycle riders, but once posts filled with references to Nazism (I don't mean anything that could be understood under the Godwin's law, I mean Holocaust deniers posting real Nazi symbology) became common place and moderators stopped banning far-right extremists, I knew it was time for me to go.

It may not be perfect, but for me, VGCollect represents an oasis of good vibes in this desert of hate that the internet is quickly turning into.

I understand that most Western gamers may now prefer digital over physical, but I don't see then latter going away anytime soon in Japan.
As for me, the day physical media dies will be the day I'll stop purchasing new video game releases (which would actually be pretty good for my wallet)...

Well, I am not actually sure about what games are you guys talking about, but if I remember well, these niche Japanese games usually weren't even published in the West up to just a few years ago, so players should be kinda glad for having them (even if with some kind of censorship) available in the first place.
Now, if a game is being censored for portraing misogynistic themes, for condoning with sexist, homophobic or xenophobic behaviour or for depicting female characters as mere objects that exist only for satisfying men, I think that Sony (or any other company for that matter) shouldn't approve it to be published on their platform anywhere in the world...

However... I consider myself to be a #feminist, a #commie and, more than anything, a #SJW and, despite living in Japan, I'm (gladly) far from being what one would consider an otaku and I have to admit that this was the first time I've ever seen the word weeb (I had to google it) so maybe I'm not the right person to comment on a post like this...

Classic Video Games / Re: Your Top Ten Recommended Nintendo 64 Games (text)
« on: February 07, 2020, 08:56:10 pm »
1- GoldenEye 007
2 - Star Wars Episode I: Racer
3 - F- Zero X
4 - Sin & Punishment
5 - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
6 - Neon Genesis Evangelion
7 - Resident Evil 2
8 - Mischief Makers
9 -  Yoshi's Story
10 - Turok: Dinosaur Hunter

I tired focusing more on exclusive games, but there are some like Turok: Dinosaur Hunter and Star Wars Episode I: Racer that, although released on other platforms, for me represent the Nintendo 64 more than any other platform. And Resident Evil 2 is here because of how it impressed me back in 2000 seeing how they were able to squish the contents of two PlayStation CD-ROMs into a single cartridge (and also because I find it to be one of the greatest games of all time)!

General / Re: Your Opinions of the Xbox Halo Series

I used to work at an electronics shop when the first Halo: Combat Evolved came out and, even though I played in one of the store's TVs whenever we had no clients, I remember I never could understand the appeal it had on so many game magazines back in the day.
A couple of years ago, I decided to finally give it a second chance and... man... now I can finally understand why so many people love this series! Even though I still don't care for the story or even Master Chief as a character, the first Halos where soooo ahead of their time when concerning gameplay! Even though I haven't played anything past Halo 3 (and I'm yet to finish a game in this series), I can say I really respect it now!

General / Re: Going Platinum

My first (and only) Platinum was in Need for Speed: Rivals.
The game is already pretty old, so it may be a little difficult to get the online trophies now, but I remember that I got its Platinum without even noticing...

I've been so tired of zombie games the last decade... That's one of the reasons I didn't enjoy The Last of Us...

General / Re: Do You Have A Hard Time Picking A Game To Play?
« on: February 07, 2020, 12:57:46 am »
I have to admit that I literally spend more time looking at my collection and thinking about what should I play than actually playing the games I own (and even when I do, I usually end up choosing something I've already played for decades... haha).

For me, the most badass character in Dragon Ball (Z included) is Piccolo. I really like his whole arch coming from Goku's worst enemy to the point of raising his son. I think his relationship with Gohan is one of the most touching aspects of the whole Z saga.

On the other hand, the characters I respect the most are Kuririn, Yamcha, Chaozu and Ten Shinhan as, although weak (especially since the begining of Dragon Ball Z), they (almost) never shied away from battle!

And from a comedy stand point, I find Pilaf and his minions and Tao Pai Pai to be the funniest ones in the whole show/comic books.

As I grew up reading Marvel, it is pretty hard for me to choose between it and Dragon Ball, but as the latter is a much wider and older universe, I believe Marvel takes the cake in this one (even though I don't appreciate their newer movies that much...). And finally, I was never a fan of DC Comics, so I can't say much about it...

Classic Video Games / Re: Game that Never Released that You Wish Had?

Weirdly for me it's Silent Hills.

Yeah... I really wish we could have played Silent Hills too...
Other than that, Half Life on the Dreamcast is a game that comes to mind...
