General / Let's Name the Top 100 RPGs, Together
« on: July 30, 2020, 02:18:43 pm »
Some of you may remember some years back we built interactive Top 100 lists for each console where we'd each take a turn naming a game to add to the list.

Well, I'm bored AF. I'm at work with nothing to do, as I have no students still and I'm prepared as I possibly can be. So let's do another list.

Rules:
-Please only name 1 game at a time.
-Please allow others to answer before providing another answer.
-This is no particular order, we're just naming them as we go.

VGCollect's Top 100 RPGs

Classic Video Games / The Original Xbox Appreciation Thread
« on: July 30, 2020, 01:07:37 pm »

I've noticed a lot of naysayers about the Original XBox, so I decided we need an Original Xbox appreciation thread!

A little history behind the Xbox:

It was Microsoft's first home console, released nearly 19 years ago in November 2001. It was called the XBox due to it relying on Microsoft's Direct X technology (originally it was going to be named the Direct Xbox.)

It was the powerhouse of it's generation, being the most powerful console on the market until the launch of it's own successor in 2005, the XBox 360. It was also the first console to have a hard drive built into it at launch, as well as the first to have a high-speed ethernet port built into it at launch (granted, the Dreamcast did have a slower 56k modem built into it before). And it enjoyed early success at the online market with the launch of the original XBox Live service; Halo 2 being a big part of that success.

The console has also been dubbed the "Dreamcast 2" by some Sega fans. This is due to having a good amount of Sega exclusives on it at the time such as Shenmue 2, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Outrun 2, Toe Jam & Earl III, Crazy Taxi 3, House of the Dead III, and others. In addition to that, the original Xbox controller was inspired by the design of the Dreamcast controller.

Xbox Live service launched in summer of 2002 with Halo 2 being the "must-have" online game to play, ensuring it's success. Halo 2 also happens to be the Original XBox's highest selling game.

The Original Xbox quickly saw games dry up for it as the XBox 360 launched in late 2005. It was officially discontinued in 2009 when Microsoft ended warranty-support for the console. The Original Xbox Live servers were shutdown in 2010, ending Xbox Live support for the console.

Original Xbox Pros:
-Most powerful console of that generation.
-Often the best multiplatform version of games.
-720p HD support right out of the box.
-Best online support of that generation, including a high-speed ethernet port built-in.
-Hard drive built-in expands the console's capabilities.
-Easily replaceable parts.
-4 Controller Ports for on couch multiplayer.
-Built for LAN-parties with multiple consoles.
-DVD and CD playback functionality
-Easy to soft-mod.
-Controllers for both big hands and small hands.
-Solid built hardware
-Strong First-Person Shooter library.
-Strong Western-RPG library.
-Solid Exclusive library (see below)
-Many of it's games are backwards compatible on XBox 360, and some even on the Xbox One.

Original Xbox Cons:
-Big and bulky.
-Lacking in JRPG titles.
-Lacking in shoot-em up titles.
-Some third-parties supported the PS2 more.
-A distinct lack of Resident Evil.
-Support for the console (as in game releases) was dropped like a rock when the 360 hit (vs the PS2 which was supported for years after the PS3 launch).

Some Great True Exclusives on the Console:
-Conker Live & Reloaded
-Dead or Alive 3
-Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes
-Jet Set Radio Future
-MechAssault 1 & 2
-Panzer Dragoon: Orta
-Project Gotham Racing 1 & 2
-Sega GT 2002
-Steel Battalion
-Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2x
-WWE Raw 1 & 2

Some Great Console Exclusives on the System:
-Advent Rising
-Arx Fatalis
-Brute Force
-Crazy Taxi 3
-Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge
-Fable
-Halo 1 & 2
-Jade Empire
-Ninja Gaiden
-Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath
-Shenmue II (in the U.S.)
-Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse

Some facts about the console you might not know:
-You can rip CDs and play them straight from your hard drive.

-The ambient noises you hear in the background while the system is running it's OS are actual NASA recordings. They wanted to give it an otherworldly feel, like it was something from out of this world.

-The parts inside are easily replaced, like a PC board. If you need to repair it, it's as simple as ordering the parts on eBay, and swapping them out.

-Because of those easily replaceable parts, you can upgrade your hard drive.

-There is a full-on Mech simulator on the console complete with fully operational Mech controls that come with the game. Steel Battalion.

-The Xbox was originally supposed to be backwards compatible with the Dreamcast in it's earlier development stages after some talks with Sega. This was due to the fact that the Dreamcast was based on Windows technology. But the idea was later scrapped.

-The Xbox can play DVDs. I know, many XBox users are going, "Duh." But when you talk to people online, you will often hear from them that the PS2 won that generation in a large part due to having a DVD-player built-in, as if the XBox couldn't do that either.

Feel free to share your thoughts, feelings, favorite games, or favorite moments from the Original Xbox.

What are some consoles that are cheap to collect for, right now?

Genesis, PS1, and PS2 used to be the cheap go-tos, but that seems to have changed in the last few years. Those consoles' games are starting to rise.

Xbox 360, Original Xbox, Wii, and Atari 2600 all still seem to be pretty cheap. I'm assuming PS3, as well, since it's that same generation as 360 and Wii, but I don't own one so I wouldn't really know.

I've also noticed that while brand-spanking new releases are still $40-$60, when a game drops in price on XBox One, it drops hard and fast (insert dirty joke here). Not sure if that's the same on PS4, because I really only get exclusives here and there for it.

And for that matter, Wii U games. They all seem to hover around $20-$30 for first-party titles, and even cheaper for third-party titles. Now is the time to stock up on those Wii U games. As unique as the console is, I see it being a niche console down the road.

What else is a good, cheap console to collect for? What are some of the pricing trends you've noticed changing in the last few years?

General / First Next-Gen Nintendo Switch Game Seemingly Announced

It begins, the hype for new hardware...

First Next-Gen Nintendo Switch Game Seemingly Announced

I didn't even realize Nintendo was already working on new hardware. I thought they were at a place where they were comfortable with Nintendo Switch. I mean they seem to be selling like chocolate cake at fat camp. Hell, I still don't own a Switch, myself (but that has a lot to do with already being a Wii U owner).

What does this mean for Metroid Prime 4 and Breath of the Wild 2? Are they not going to be Switch games, as originally promised? Maybe cross-platform releases like Twilight Princess and Breath of the Wild was?

What do you think? Are you ready for new Nintendo hardware?

For me it's Wolfenstein: The New Order.

I expected an average, forgettable shooter. Instead got a great, action-packed alternate-history story.

So, did you guys watch it today? What were your thoughts? What are you excited about?

My reaction...meh.

I am very excited about the new Halo. That I will be buying. But it's not gonna get me to buy an Xbox Series X since it's compatible with Xbox One. It looks to be a return to the old Halo style, but with next-gen graphics. Sounds great to me.

State of Decay 4 looked damn impressive, but I've never played a game in that series. So it looks like I might have a new series to dive into. Which also means there's no rush for me to get 4 yet.

The rest of it just didn't interest me. But then, honestly, that's how I felt about the PS4 reveal. I'm just not as excited for next-gen as I have been previous generations.

Off Topic / The Comic-Con Super Thread
« on: July 21, 2020, 01:54:34 pm »
It seems hard to believe since nearly everything has been cancelled, but it's nearly upon us! Tomorrow (Wednesday) it begins and goes through Sunday. The big guns come out Thursday with Marvel and DC's panels.

This year it is completely interactive and free, due to COVID-19. I'm not sure exactly how it's all gonna work, but here's a link to the official website:

https://www.comic-con.org/

Supposedly there will still be full panels, previews, interviews, artist's alley, celebrities, a museum, even an exhibit floor to buy stuff. There will also be digital guides, and even free merchandise.

ComicTom has a YouTube rundown on what to expect, but he even he says he's not exactly sure how it will all go down. See it here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTKonVZQ970

Feel free to keep the thread going and discuss any news or events happening throughout the week.

General / Atari VCS - Atari's New Console
« on: July 20, 2020, 02:08:41 pm »

https://atarivcs.com/

Has anyone here been following this thing?

I've heard things and seen updates through the last couple of years via Facebook groups and whatnot.

It sounds interesting enough. A bunch of old Atari classics bundled with the system, and the ability to download even more classics via an online service. It's Linux-based. And it features both classic-style Atari 2600 joysticks, and modern controllers. But it's not just a Flashback or clone console, they're promising new games, as well; which really is the most interesting part of this for me.

That all sounds cool enough for the retro-enthusiast, except for one thing...

THEY WANT $399 FOR THIS THING! CRAZY!

What do you think? Are you onboard? You getting one? Am I the only one that thinks $400 is way too much for what is basically a nostalgia piece?

Off Topic / Are Any VGCollectors Also Movie Collectors?
« on: July 20, 2020, 01:53:40 pm »
Do we have movie collectors here?

What do you collect? Blu-Ray? VHS? Laserdisc? DVD? Do you just pick-up any format?

What genres are you into? Cult stuff? Anime? Disney? Porn? Whatever?

Drop a picture of your collection, if possible!

Classic Video Games / The Price of PS2 Games Are Exploding
« on: July 20, 2020, 01:49:27 pm »
According to this article, at least:

https://ghettogamer.net/2020/07/18/collecting-ps2-games/?fbclid=IwAR3PwLQBDAluMNc74PYChSaVgUqn1FM86ZxZvlF4wnheBu1_79rvWwHI4LU

Thoughts on this? You think PS2's time is here?

Honestly, except for a few exceptions that have always been pricey, I haven't noticed this uptick in price. But then, I'm also not really actively hunting for PS2 games. I have mostly what I want for PS2, with a few small exceptions.

What about you guys? Have you noticed this trend while out hunting? Is it time to thin out the PS2 collection and make a little dough?

General / Remakes and Remasters - Yay or Nay?
« on: July 20, 2020, 01:45:03 pm »
Do you buy remakes/remasters? Or are you in the camp that thinks they are a waste of time and only made because of a lack of imagination? If you do like them, what are some of your favorites?

I warmed up to the idea of remasters. At first, I thought it was stupid. Why buy a game you already own? Which as a collector, if it's a game that interested me, there's a good chance I already had it. But later on, I decided HD and achievements make it worth it, as long as the price isn't too bad and it's a game I really enjoy.

Remakes, however, I've always been big on, as long as it's something I enjoy. I always like seeing what changes were made to a remake. Resident Evil 1 and Metroid: Zero Mission being my favorite ones. So well done and examples that others can look to. DuckTales Remastered was damn good, too.

General / Nintendo Switch or PS5?
« on: July 20, 2020, 11:46:46 am »

So from here on out, I'm gonna be saving spare cash here or there towards a new console. I'm just not sure which one I want.

I know I want a Switch. But for a scant few games. You see, I'm already a Wii U owner. So a good majority of the games I'd want I already own on Wii U. I want Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, mostly. I also want Super Mario Odyssey and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3. But also later down the line I want Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 and Metroid Prime 4 whenever those come out. I REALLY want Breath of the Wild 2.

On the other hand...next-gen! You can already tell things are winding down this generation. A lot of the games still coming out are just the normal yearly release type of games (Call of Duty, WWE, sports, etc.); or remasters/remakes. Switch is cool to have for those few Nintendo games that are always stellar, but I don't want to miss out on the main-course type of games. On the other hand, it's gonna be PRICEY!

What to do, what to do...

I know, some of you are saying, "But what about XBox Series X?" That reveal video earlier this year was pretty lackluster. Unless they pull something out to really wow me, that killed a lot of excitement I had for it. This coming from an Xbox guy. I bought an Xbox before I did my PS2 and GameCube, I got a 360 before my Wii (never did get a PS3), and this gen got the XBox One before the Wii U or PS4.

Man do I hope they aren't blowing smoke up our asses, because I think the only game series I want a sequel for more is King's Field (which will probably never happen ☹️)

They said while it's not happening soon, a Brutal Legend sequel was "inevitable"; due to the creators pouring their heart and soul into the game; and the director himself loving the game and replays it once a year.

I absolutely adore the original game, and would pre-order Brutal Legend 2 the moment it was announced. I had so much fun with the first game. The visuals, the humor, the gameplay, the open-world, the soundtrack; it was amazing! (I do agree with complaints that we could have done without the strategy segments, but it wasn't often enough to ruin the game.)

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE follow-through with this promise; Double-Fine.

General / Ys Books I & II Question
« on: December 31, 2018, 04:05:59 pm »
So I've been pretty hit or miss with Ys games. I remember playing the original way back on the TurboGrafx-16...and I hated the bump system. I also played Ys III on SNES, and hated how the game felt like it was in fast-forward constantly.

But then I played more recent entries (Ark of Nasptism and Oath in Felghana), and I LOVED THEM. I also ordered Ys Seven as a result.

So now I'm looking at Ys: Books I & II for either PSP or DS. I hear that the PSP version has the dreaded bump-system from the original that I hate. But that the DS version uses a real attack button. Awesome, so I'm gonna get the DS version, I think. But then a buddy tells me that the DS port is just a steaming, buggy, pile of garbage...

What do you guys think? How is the DS version? Is it that bad?

OMG!!! Such a geek-out moment!!! Teaser at the end of the oh-so-awesome CW superhero crossover event last night:

If you aren't a comic fan, you just don't understand. This was the single greatest superhero epic ever told in comic books. To see it get any kind of film treatment, even if it is just a T.V. budget, is amazingly awesome!
