Infamous video game landfill faces excavation

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (Credit: Atari)

One of gaming’s greatest mysteries might soon be uncovered.

You’ve likely heard the tale before: Millions of unsold copies of the disastrous ET: The Extraterrestrial game for the Atari 2600 lie buried in a New Mexico landfill. Despite a slew of believers and evidence supporting the story, doubters remain. But in the next few months, we'll have the answer once and for all.

The Alamogordo City Commission has approved a deal that will allow for the excavation of the landfill to see what, exactly, is buried there. The big dig will be filmed by Fuel Industries, a Canadian film production company with plans to create a documentary about the gaming legend.

Fuel has access to the landfill for the next six months, which would put it there on the 30th anniversary of the dump. Alamogordo, as you might suspect, is hoping to raise awareness of the town -- and perhaps attract a few tourists to the area.

Modern Video Games / Nintendo's "Let's Play" Controversy

Nintendo Flexing Copyright Clout on YouTube Let’s Play Channels

Nintendo is reportedly issuing “content ID match” claims on Let’s Play videos featuring their game franchises, according to prolific YouTuber Zack Scott, who is currently playing Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon.
Scott noted that Nintendo made content ID matches against a number of his videos, thus preventing him from monetizing those videos on YouTube.
In a Facebook post, Scott wrote the following message as an open letter to Nintendo:
I just want to express my feelings on the matter of Nintendo claiming not just my YouTube videos, but from several LPers as well.
I’m a Nintendo fan. I waited in the cold overnight to get a Wii. I’m a 3DS ambassador. I got a Wii U at midnight when I already had one in the mail. I’ve been a Nintendo fan since the NES, and I’ve owned all of their systems.
With that said, I think filing claims against LPers is backwards. Video games aren’t like movies or TV. Each play-through is a unique audiovisual experience. When I see a film that someone else is also watching, I don’t need to see it again. When I see a game that someone else is playing, I want to play that game for myself! Sure, there may be some people who watch games rather than play them, but are those people even gamers?
My viewers watch my gameplay videos for three main reasons: 1. To hear my commentary/review. 2. To learn about the game and how to play certain parts. 3. To see how I handle and react to certain parts of the game.
Since I started my gaming channel, I’ve played a lot of games. I love Nintendo, so I’ve included their games in my line-up. But until their claims are straightened out, I won’t be playing their games. I won’t because it jeopardizes my channel’s copyright standing and the livelihood of all LPers.
So, What the Hell are Content ID Matches, Anyway? Note that content ID matches are different from ‘copyright strikes,’ which YouTube issues a channel after processing a verified request for the full removal of a video by the copyright owner. If a channel receives “three strikes,” YouTube suspends the channel and deletes all of its videos.
Content ID matches are less severe. When a publisher issues a content ID match against a video, it allows them to monetize that video with in-video ads, block it in certain countries, or even block it from playing worldwide. If a video is blocked worldwide as a result of a content ID match, the associated channel can lose its “good standing,” and as as result lose access to certain YouTube features.
Based on Nintendo’s statement to Game Front (below), it would appear they are not opting to block videos from playing outright, but rather monetize videos over a certain length with their own ads.
Widespread Complaints
Scott is not alone in his complaints, which have since been echoed by a number of other YouTubers, as well as Thomas Was Alone creator Mike Bithell.
Nintendo issued Game Front the following statement:
As part of our on-going push to ensure Nintendo content is shared across social media channels in an appropriate and safe way, we became a YouTube partner and as such in February 2013 we registered our copyright content in the YouTube database. For most fan videos this will not result in any changes, however, for those videos featuring Nintendo-owned content, such as images or audio of a certain length, adverts will now appear at the beginning, next to or at the end of the clips. We continually want our fans to enjoy sharing Nintendo content on YouTube, and that is why, unlike other entertainment companies, we have chosen not to block people using our intellectual property.

What do you guys think about all of this?

I think Nintendo is shooting themselves in foot with this decision. Lets Play is no different than a fan tribute, a review, fan-fic, or a song cover. This is fan-interaction that gives Nintendo free publicity.

However to be directly confrontational with those same fans, and slapping on the wrist because they love your product; is just gonna drive away that fanbase.
Legally, they did nothing wrong. But they did make a huge mistake with the fans.

ABC Orders Whedon's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." to Series

This Fall, Joss Whedon will once again have a series on network television. "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.LD." pilot was ordered by ABC last August, and now various sources including Entertainment Weekly, IGN and SitcomcsOnline are reporting that ABC has all but publicly confirmed the pilot has been picked up to series.

Directed by "The Avengers" helmer Whedon and co-written by Whedon along with "Dollhouse" veterans Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, the series spins out of the events of "The Avengers" and stars Clark Gregg, returning to his fan-favorite role as Agent Phil Coulson, and Marvel Universe newcomers Brett Dalton, Ming-Na-Wen, Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge and Chloe Bennet.

Amidst the flurry of reports about the pickup, ABC also briefly released a 7-second teaser on the youtube page that was pulled soon after its release according to Slashfilm. The video features a rampaging Hulk caught on video, as well as a logo reading "Rising Tide." You can view the teaser embedded below.

Site Feedback / Rating and Reviewing Games
« on: May 07, 2013, 08:27:46 pm »
So since we've been on the subject of game ratings lately, I thought this might be a cool idea:

Could there be any way for members to rate and/or review games on the website? When I say "rate", I'm not talking like ESRB ratings, I'm mean a scale based on how well a member liked it (such as a 1 through 10 scale), which an average of members rated scores could be displayed next to the game. Being able to have member reviews of the game would be cool, too.

Off Topic / What T.V. Shows Do You Want to See Rebooted?
« on: May 07, 2013, 05:02:14 pm »
I'd love to see a new Star Trek series, more than anything. It's been too long since Enterprise was cancelled, and the movies more than prove there is still plenty of life left in the franchise.

The sci-fi genre in general is really lacking on T.V. at the moment. I'd be happy with any decent sci-fi show. I know there's Defiance on right now, but that really hasn't wowed me. And CW's shows aren't really sci-fi at all, they're just teen romance disguised as such.

A reboot of Sliders would be cool to see, too. I loved that show while FOX was still carrying it, it had such a cool sense of exploration and discovery, and had a great cast. After the Sci-Fi Channel took over, though, the show sharply declined in quality and we lost John-Rhys Davies and Jerry O'Connel, the 2 best cast members.

I'd also love to see some GOOD DC Comics cartoons return. Cartoon Network's decision to cancel Green Lantern and Young Justice for the kiddie-version of Teen Titans is unforgivable. If I could have my dream, just make DC Nation a 2-hour block, and bring back Batman: TAS, Batman Beyond, Superman TAS, and Justice League Unlimited with all-new episodes. But that will probably never happen.

Oh, how about bringing back G4/TechTV Icons? Best video game T.V. show, EVER, IMO. Such a cool and entertaining way to learn about the history of the gaming industry. And there were still many subjects and franchises left unexplored by that show.

The return of Headbanger's Ball on MTV would be fantastic, as well. I'm a huge metal-head, and this was the best show on T.V. to see the latest metal videos, see interviews with bands, and the latest going-ons in the topsy-turvy world of metal.

Hardware and Tech / Action Replay DS Help
« on: May 04, 2013, 01:36:57 pm »
I just found one, complete in the package at Goodwill for $10. Brought it home, installed the software for code & firmware updates, and hooked her up to the PC (Windows 8).

The screen just sits there saying "Waiting for Nintendo DS".

I know it's not a hardware problem, because my PC clearly detects a device being plugged in when the USB cord is plugged in, makes the little jingle noise and everything.

I tried all the updates on CodeJunkies website. Then I had a whole new list of problems. Some were for the Action Replay DSi, and the only one I could find for the Action Replay DS was some code updates prominently featuring codes for the new Pokémon games. So I tried the DSi ones anyways, and still it didn't work, because the updates won't start installing until it detects the Nintendo DS, which is the problem.

So next I go and check the driver. Turns out that while the installation named a driver, when I go to update it, there actually isn't a driver there of any sort!

So then I start Googling the problem and the best answer I can find is to download the firmware updates, which like I explained won't update until the software detects my Nintendo DS! Yet it seems like this is a common problem, because I found a lot of discussion on it after Googling it.

Does anyone know of a solution to this problem that actually works?

Off Topic / Name That Movie!
« on: April 30, 2013, 11:32:58 pm »
So this thread is the "Name That Movie" thread.

You post a pic, and other members try to guess what movie it's from. Whoever gets it right, gets to post the next one.

No cheating (you know what I mean, no peaking at the source), because then it's not fun, and what's the point then?

Check it out:

It looks freaking awesome!

I was really thinking about getting a Nintendo 3DS after seeing Super Mario Land 3D and New Super Mario Bros. 2. Seeing this game, that decision has pretty much been cemented.

CAN'T FREAKING WAIT FOR THIS!!!

Now we just need a new 2D Metroid game!

Hardware and Tech / Help! I Think My Saturn is dying!
« on: April 08, 2013, 04:42:42 pm »
I was playing Astal last night, and I had to restart the Saturn a few times to get it to work. It kept wanting to read it as a CD. When it finally did work as a game, it froze up a couple times.

Before any of that, when I started it up, it asked for the date, time, and language. Figured that was easy enough to fix by replacing the watch battery.

Do you think the two problems are related? Or is my Saturn going out?

I really hope not, because I really have only scratched the surface of the Saturn. And Saturn collecting is getting too dang expensive to start over again.

Any suggestions on any quick fixes I can do?

I have a U.S. model, black, with the round buttons.

We all know Mario and Sonic are the kings of platforming. Everybody loves them.

But what are some of the platformers you love that don't involve fat plumbers or blue hedgehogs?

Off Topic / What Other Hobbies Do You Have Outside of Gaming?
« on: April 05, 2013, 12:16:10 am »
What other hobbies do you have outside of gaming?

I'm pretty much your all around geek.

Metal-Head:

I'm also a big metal-head. I have been since I was like 11 years old, and will be for life (I'll be 30 in a couple months). I'm spread across the board when it comes to metal. New, old, mainstream, underground, whatever. I'll listen to 80s hair metal, grunge, black metal, thrash, power metal, classic rock. You name it.

The metal I won't listen to is anything that's just straight anti-God or anti-Christian because I am a Christian. I don't like the sound of straight death-metal, I just can't get past the constant guttural vocals. And I mostly don't like any metal that mixes rap into it. Linkin Park seems to have a few exceptions to that rule that I find myself enjoying, though.

I haven't seen a whole lot of shows, though. I live in a rural area, so I have to travel a ways to see a show. The few I have seen have been damn good, though: Five Finger Death Punch, 3 Inches of Blood, All That Remains, Ratt, Tesla, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, and even an Ozzfest.

Sci-Fi, Fantasy, & Horror Movie Fan:

Love the stuff. Always have. Far back as I can remember I was into sci-fi and horror movies (same goes for comic books). I'm particularly fond of Star Trek stuff and 80s & 90s sci-fi and horror films.

Some favorite horror films includes: Nightmare on Elm Street series, George Romero's Dead movies (Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, etc.), Event Horizon, House of 1000 Corpses, Wrong Turn, Resident Evil, The Lost Boys, The Monster Squad, Underworld.

Some favorite sci-fi/fantasy films include: Star Trek stuff, Alien Trilogy, Terminator films, Predator films, Ghostbusters 1 & 2, Dune, Equilibrium, Demolition Man, Back to the Future Trilogy, Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Conan films, etc.

Pro-Wrestling Fan:

I'm more of a fan of the older stuff, but I still keep up with what's going on in WWE and TNA. I was particularly a huge fan of the 80s WWF, the WWF Attitude Era, and especially of WCW. Man, do I miss WCW. Not only was it my favorite wrestling company, but because of the competition they gave WWF, it brought out the best in the WWF. WWE is a shadow of it's former glory during those years.

Some favorite wrestlers: Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, The Undertaker, Triple H, Hogan, The Hardy Boyz, Kevin Nash, Goldberg, nWo, Degeneration-X, Ric Flair and the Four Horsemen, Evolution.
