Video Game Database Discussion / Re: Listing Errors 2015
« on: February 22, 2015, 06:14:01 am »
Not sure this belongs here but I didn't want to start a new thread just for this. An edit was rejected and I just wanted to point out why I suggested changing a title. You have Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker and the edit I submitted removed the second set of colons, which is how Atlus has it on the sales sheet. It's possible the sale sheet could have an error though that seemed like the most reliable source.

I based my decision off of this section of the Style Guide:
Quote
Games with subtitles:  Subtitle should follow the main title after a colon.

Advance Wars: Dual Strike
Bionic Commando: ReArmed
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire

We do not necessarily go by the title from official site, game review sites, etc.

I would never base a title from a game review site either and not necessarily an official site as those do tend to contain errors. I'm using the marketing materials that Atlus provides to retailers :P I'm not trying to argue the point, just thought I should state the source and I understand that colons go before a subtitle but I didn't think it applied in this case since nothing needs to be there.

The figurine listings have been discussed in a few threads I believe and has been a work in progress. Check out this thread for some of the past discussion: http://vgcollect.com/forum/index.php/topic,5444.0.html

This is an old thread that I thought I posted in years ago and yet I see no post by myself  ??? Maybe we discussed location in another thread once. In any case, I'm still in Michigan, about 90 minutes south of VGCollect HQ. I'm originally from Connecticut and also lived in Arizona for about nine years.

Video Game Database Discussion / Re: Developer/Publisher Requests
« on: February 19, 2015, 05:30:46 am »
It's been two weeks since my request, three if you count the request in the thread about companies being added back to the database  :-\ I don't like to bump the thread but nobody else has requested any adds which I find surprising. If you're not ready to add companies yet that's fine, I'm just wondering why it is taking so long. Thanks.

Modern Video Games / Square Enix Members
« on: February 18, 2015, 12:25:14 pm »
Did anyone use the old Square Enix Members site? Their games came with codes for a while, sort of like the Club Nintendo codes. Then after a year they stopped giving out points while re-doing it and I think it was that way all of last year. Now it is back but unfortunately all the old points are gone and the code cards are useless. I have a stack of codes I was waiting to use so I'm disappointed. It appears about the only way to get points now is to purchase items from the Square Enix Online Store. At least that's how it now is in the U.S., not sure if it varies in other regions though I'd guess they re-did this to make all regions work the same way. A link to the new program details: https://store.na.square-enix.com/members

The one and only year they had the points they sent out gifts at the end of the year based on what tier members had reached. I can't recall exactly what I received. I know I got a backpack and Space Invaders erasers. There might have been a deck of Space Invaders playing cards too.

Video Game Database Discussion / Re: Amiibo & others listings
« on: February 17, 2015, 05:59:40 am »
SSB is only the initial game that Amiibo are going to be accessible on and as such, no reason to include the name. I cant imagine anyone is going to look for them by typing in "Super smash bros Wii U Amiibo Mario" and instead just searching "Amiibo Mario".

Now they have the game name in the title in parentheses and I'm wondering if that's the new policy or if a staff member just accepted the edits without discussing it since they all appear to be title edit submissions by a fairly new user. That leads me to my next question, something I've been wondering for a while: how many staff members are there and who are they? Does each person have a specific role? I've been visiting the site on and off for years but have no idea if the full staff is listed somewhere on the site. I realize some have admin in their forum profile, though I'm not seeing a way to pull up all the forum users (and perhaps sort by their profile title).

I understand what your going through, I try not to go to crazy myself.
I try and use "make offer" a lot, just because 90% of the time i get shot down. lol

I had to look up this coffee table, I don't know if it's the one you saw but something don't add up....
They sell it at a buy it now for $10, with $499 shipping, then you go to details and he says "cost $1000.00"
Its cool as hell and I'd love one myself, but no way I want to drop that much for one. and the way he prices it is confusing.

Link in case you want to see it.

I think the pricing has something to do with the way ebay fees work. They'll take a percentage of the sale price but I don't believe the shipping is part of that so the seller is just trying to avoid paying ebay more than a few cents.

General / Re: Recently completed/finished
« on: February 16, 2015, 05:47:38 pm »
I played through To the Moon yesterday. It's an indie game and only about three hours long. Interesting game, though I didn't think it was as emotional as many of the Steam user reviews made it out to be. That said, the only reason to play it is for the story as the gameplay is limited. Most of the game involves jumping from one brief scene to another. You see what happened, click on five objects, and then do one quick and easy puzzle before moving onto the next scene (same type of puzzle throughout the whole game, just flipping some squares to make an image).

Last week I finished Valkyria Chronicles on PC. I had played through that on PS3 five years ago and just wanted to play it again so I got the PC version when it was on sale.

Video Game Database Discussion / Re: A Few Questions

What is odd about the titling here is sticking the article in front of the subtitle. You mentioned The Sims 3 in your first post and that would be Sims 3, The. Now if you were to enter a Sims 3 listing with a subtitle the VGCollect style guide asks that you write The Sims 3 in the same way and then add the subtitle (ex. Sims 3, The: University Life). To me that's odd, and I'm not sure what the thinking is behind that but maybe someone else can explain the reason for it. I'm not sure if I've inquired about it before and if I did it would have been more than three years ago, and my memory isn't good enough to remember. If you were writing out a list on your own and wanted to remove the article from the front you'd want to write Sims 3: University Life, The.

The reason why "the" comes after the game and before the subtitle is so that the base game comes before all the expansions.  For example:

Sims 3, The
Sims 3, The: 70's, 80's and 90's Stuff
Sims 3, The: Pets
Sims 3, The: University Life

vs

Sims 3: 70's, 80's and 90's Stuff, The
Sims 3: Pets, The
Sims 3, The
Sims 3: University Life, The

Hope that helps explain it!

Okay. It doesn't seem too important to have the base game first but I'll continue to go along with it anyways  :D Would probably be better to enter titles exactly as they appear on a box and create a secondary field used for the alphabetizing but that's a lot of work at this point, and as usual I don't know what programming challenges that would present. It would probably be near impossible to get all the non-forum users to fill in a second box as well.

Speaking of the Developers and Publishers, I put a book up and the Developers and Publishers fields was there? Shouldn't Developer say 'Writer'?, because I put the writer in that field and I don't know if that was correct? Also there was a paperback, and hardcover version of the book so should it say 'name of book (paperback)' or 'name of book- paperback? Sorry for all the questions, but you guys have been a huge help so far :)

I think publisher and developer go across all categories regardless of if they apply. Hardware also says developer/publisher though manufacturer might make more sense. In any case, I don't know what to tell you for books but they generally do have a publisher so that should work. The problem with using a writer's name is that it then creates a company entry as the name of that person.  Author could possibly be mentioned in the description box. A staff member will have to weigh in on this one.

Thank you guys for the help :)

I will still feel a little bad spamming the admins, but its good to know you won't mind too much :P

It also looks like I need to brush up on my English skills, I didn't realise the words 'a', 'an' and 'the' was ignored, but I can understand the logic behind it, so don't worry I won't add items that begin with 'the' to the T section. :)

It's good to see so many people replied to help and so quickly, was a little unexpected. Is there anything else I should know?

I wouldn't feel bad about asking questions. Searching the forums might get you some answers as the site has been around since 2011 I believe, but sometimes forum searches don't find exactly what you want. Most of the problems with the game listings are from people who never step into the forums and read the style guide. They just add duplicates and or make title errors. That said, while I go along with the titling here, it's not entirely accurate and I wouldn't want you to assume it is proper English. As desocietas mentioned, some software can ignore articles and alphabetize properly on its own so you will see listings elsewhere that include the article at the start of a title but be alphabetized by the word following the article. However, there are many websites that will incorrectly alphabetize game titles by the article. If you were writing out a list on your own and wanted to remove the article from the front you'd want to write Sims 3: University Life, The.

Although you got responses about the publishers and developers, I'd like to add that the drop down menu that appears when typing a company name isn't going to give you names that are 100% accurate. Those were added primarily by those of us submitting game titles a few years ago. Originally we could add companies when submitting games. Unfortunately, there are many variations on company names and there are also numerous spelling errors in those listings. So when you type a company you might see a few different versions of the same company and there might not even be the exact name you want. I'd recommend selecting the best possible answer since we cannot create new entries. I expect someone will eventually merge them all together correctly. It's a big project as there are many companies and the way it was handled from the start must have led to a huge number of errors. There is a thread where you can request for a company to be added but I'm not sure anyone is checking that yet as I've been waiting 10 days.

Modern Video Games / Re: Playstation All-Stars 2 - Ideal Roster?
« on: February 14, 2015, 06:57:22 am »
Lara Croft, Solid Snake, Cloud, (Pre-Reboot) Dante (even if it's an alt costume), annnnd Shadow the Hedgehog? No? No? Come on that game wasn't THAT bad... no? oh...
How would shadow be an playstation all stars character? I don't see how that would work, as his game was a multiplat release, and he hasn't enough apperances with the playstation brand to warrant that.

Yeah, most of the characters being mentioned aren't owned by Sony and have appeared on many other platforms. I know the first game had a number of third-party characters because Sony doesn't have enough popular characters of their own. Most companies outside of Nintendo don't though. I like Sega but I didn't really agree with all of their choices on the kart racing games which made me wonder if maybe they don't even have enough to choose from either. Despite ToeJam & Earl being synonymous with Genesis they don't have the rights and couldn't manage to get them. Anyways, I'm not sure what to use as a basis for selecting a PlayStation All-Star character. Do you think they'll even consider making a sequel?

Perhaps someone from the first Tenchu game would work, though those characters likely aren't too recognizable. Thinking of my early PS2 days, I bought that system for SSX and Dynasty Warriors, two games with lots of characters though again, they probably aren't really big or interesting enough. How about someone from Hot Shots Golf? That's one of my favorite Sony series. Not sure if any one character stands out since they generally make new characters and caddies each game. Hot Shots Golf 3 was popular at my place of work for a while and most seemed to get a laugh out of the caddy Hubert. Yeah, like every one I'm mentioning, very few people would care about Hubert as well. I just don't see many of the most popular third-party game characters as PlayStation characters.

Really no one else cares about this issue other than Exonerator?

It doesn't really bother me but if it were my database I'd use the official names of each system, so company name in there if that's the way it is supposed to be. I'm not sure about alphabetizing or going by year of release. When I look at the list I'm more distracted by the fact that the left column doesn't line up at least closely to the bottom of the right column  ;) That right side sure is a lot longer.

By the way, if you were to go by official names it might make sense to rename the Atari 2600 since that wasn't its first name. It's certainly the most widely used name but if it was switched the original name (Atari Video Computer System or Atari VCS) and alphabetized then it would be at the very bottom of the Atari system list.

Anyone like to remind me how to embed the youtube link on here.... every forum i am on has a different part of the link you need to use.

I'm not sure about the embedding, I'm never too good at that myself.

I saw that trailer yesterday. It looks like an average action movie but not a great Hitman movie. I've played all but the first Hitman game and they just aren't action-packed games unless you're a terrible assassin :D Maybe it's not a game that translates well to a movie, though I'm sure Hollywood just wants to make what sells so they don't care. In that case though, I would think the Hitman license doesn't bring much value to the movie. After the first movie it might actually be a deterrent to movie goers.
