Classic Video Games / Wii Us are Bricking

So the latest news in the video game world is that Wii Us are bricking on their own after long periods of not being in use.

I'm not clear if they just need to stay plugged-in or if they actually have to be used. Mine stays hooked-up and plugged-in as all of my consoles do. And mine still runs fine after checking it, so I think it just has to be plugged-in.

Is your Wii U still running?

Classic Video Games / Why are the NES era Consoles 3rd Gen and not 4th?

Something to chew on:

The Atari 2600 is a 2nd generation console. The Atari 5200 is it's successor making it a 3rd generation console.

That would mean the Atari 7800 and it's contemporaries (NES/Master System) are 4th generation consoles...so who decided they were 3rd generation consoles?!

One of my favorite genres! Are you a fan? What got you into them? What are some of your favorites in the genre?

When I originally got my NES as a wee lad Star Soldier was amongst the games I got with it. Played the hell out out of the game. Loved it. Still own it to this day. Ever since then I've loved a good shoot-em up game. (Though I can't say I'm a big fan of the bullet hell stuff that came out years later.)

An underrated platformer series that I don't hear a lot of people talk about. I own all three of them. Are you a fan?

The first game is getting a remake next month, which honestly was surprising. I wasn't expecting that game to get a remake. I already have it pre-ordered. Anyone else looking forward to it?

Sonic Frontiers is looking better and better, yet less and less like a Sonic game. And I'll probably check out the Pac-Man World remake, if they don't give it a full $60 price tag.

General / Consoles/Handhelds That You Hate

We've had a lot of dedicated threads to consoles that we love. But what some consoles that you particularly hate...and why?

For me, it's definitely the N64. After the smash hits of the NES and SNES I just expected more from the N64. It feel like that's when Nintendo started getting less everybody focused and more kiddie-focused on some of their stuff. Only a scant few RPGs and shoot-em ups definitely didn't help things for me. And more than anything, that damn controller. I so loathe the N64 controller. The hand placement is stupid, and the thumbstick is waaayyyy too sensitive and prone to breaking. Plus no Metroid game? For shame, Nintendo.

PSP. It's not that it's a bad handheld, in fact the graphics looked magnificent for the time (for being a handheld). And the game library is great. I just really hate that so many games required that you use their stupid thumb-circle thingy, I hate that thing. (If you can't tell, comfortable controls is a must for me.)

Tiger LCD games. There are a few exceptions here. I mean Electronic Pinball can be fun in short bursts. But most of these games are complete crap. And as a kid, I fell for that cool packaging they usually had. Only to be duped by a ridiculously simple, and anything but fun game. But I could convince my mom to get me one of these once in a while, no way I was convincing her to get me a Game Boy or Game Gear.

Atari 2600. I know, it's the first really successful console. It's a HUGE part of gaming history. And I understand that, and appreciate that it paved the way for what came later. I even find the history of the console and company quite interesting. But the console itself, I just can't get into it. The games are too simple for me. The sounds that come from it are ungodly. And the joystick is stiff and hard to use.

General / Games That You Want Sequels To

What games do you wish had sequels coming out?

The oldest game I think has long deserved a sequel is Crystalis (NES/GBC). The best action-RPG on the NES, in my book. It plays overhead and has a similar gameplay style as the original Legend of Zelda. But it has more of a story, more locations to visit, and RPG mechanics added to it.

I so want a sequel to Brutal Legend. As a metal fan, I adored that game. The easter eggs were everywhere. It had a great sense of humor. I loved the actual metal songs used as unlockables. And the open-world gameplay with the hot rod racing around was just so much fun. Admittedly the strategy elements used later in the game weren't implemented well (or even necessary), but I can overlook that considering the rest of the game and it could be something fixed (or taken out completely) in the sequel if it ever happens.

Finally, King's Field. Yeah, it had 3 releases in the U.S., so it had sequels, BUT I WANT MORE!!! Great, and unique action-RPG played from the first-person view with gameplay that focuses on swordplay, magic, and especially exploration with lots of secrets and lore to discover. Souls fans like to say it still exists in those games, but I vehemently disagree, they feel completely different to me. I do not love Souls games the same way I do King's Field.

Site Feedback / Edits Are Messing Up

Off Topic / Halo Paramount+ Series Trailer

This looks so damn cool! I can't wait!

Unlike many comic movies, this characters and costumes look identical to their video game counterparts. It looked to have good action, and top-notch effects and budget.

Here's to hoping the final product can live up to the trailer.

Classic Video Games / GameCube 20th Anniversary

20 years ago the purple lunchbox launched 3 days after Xbox.

What did you think of it? It may not have been Nintendo's most successful console, but it had some generation defining games such as Metroid Prime, the phenomenal Resident Evil remake, and Legend of Zelda: Windwaker.

I have a small, but cherished GameCube collection. And the Game Boy Player attachment makes it something I always have hooked up.

Modern Video Games / Xbox 20th Anniversary

Xbox turns 20. The youngest of the big console gaming companies is now 20. Did anyone watch the special they did yesterday for it? About a half hour to 40 minutes long, not too long.

It was mostly memories and nostalgia for Xbox gamers. But there were a handful of interesting announcements, as well:

-A 6-part documentary series on the history and behind-the-scenes of Xbox. I'm definitely interested in this, as I'm a sucker for gaming documentaries.

-A special 20th Anniversary Edition Controller - Meh, modern controllers are expensive, I'm fine with my stock Xbox Series X controller.

-Halo: Infinite Multiplayer Beta is now live and accessible for everyone. Plus everything earned will transfer over when the official version launches.

-Over 70 new backwards compatible titles that will be playable on Xbox One, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X with enhanced graphics and FPS. This has me excited as XBox Series X's robust backwards compatibility was a big reason for me getting a Series X:

General / The Best Metroidvanias

I LOVE Metroidvanias! It all began with Super Metroid on the SNES, which I still consider the top of the class in Metroidvania. I love the sense of exploration and character progression. So I decided we needed a dedicated thread to this wonderful genre of video games.

What do you consider a Metroidvania? Are you one of those that only consider 2D games Metroidvanias? Or are you open to the idea of 3D games being included, such as King's Field or the Batman Arkham games? Do Resident Evil games count since there's a lot of map unlocking and backtracking (though not much in the sense of character progression)?

What are some of your favorite Metroidvanias?

My list of favorites:

-Super Metroid
-Metroid: Zero Mission
-Metroid: Fusion
-Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
-All the GBA and DS Castlevania games
-Cave Story
-Ori and the Blind Forest (both of these games are absolutely stunning looking)
-Ori and the Will O Wisps
-Shadow Complex Remastered (damn underrated game)
-Axion Verge
-King's Field 1-3 (some of my all-time favorites, as I'm sure some of you already know)
-The Batman Arkham Trilogy
-Shantae and the Pirate's Curse

I really feel like Shovel Knight has many of the Metroidvania qualities to it, and is one helluva game, but thought it didn't count since it is a level-by-level affair.
