Spent the last 3 hours writing up blurbs about the games I had played this year.  Managed to get up to like a week ago, hoping I can bother to churn out a few more blurbs tomorrow and catch up.

life is exhausting and generally sucks, but you know, that's life.

Man, I really hate to hear that. Anything I can help with?
Nope just been sick a lot and to be blunt my kid is a terror.

Yeah, I don't even buy like a single game per month anymore.  I don't even recall the last time I actually made a retro purchase, games I buy these days are modern or steam.

I don't know if it's what I'm playing or what, but I'm having one of the worst years making progress.  I've only beaten 9 games so far this year.  I've normally got that by the end of January.

On the one hand I'm playing longer games with no side games running, I'm generally not playing during the day anymore, and I've been sick pretty much nonstop since January... so I guess there could be reasons.

I'm not going to make edits because it'll just get rejected, but I'll inform folks so maybe Dhaabi can fix it.  All of the PS4 Accessory listings for the 20th anniversary controllers are incorrect in their description

"packaging text in English, French model #: CUH-ZCT1U embossed touchpad with 2, O, X, square, triangle symbols available as a part of the Sony PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary Edition boxed release or as a standalone retail release"

Console release of the controller has the iconography on the touchpad, all standalone retail releases do not have the iconography on the touchpad.  They are different controllers.

Microsoft aquiring Epic Games, Rockstar Games and Mojang.
No.  No.  And they acquired Mojang a long time ago.

So I'm posting this super late, but I'm finally getting around to finishing up writing stuff for last year and building my final stats.

Console breakdown
Platform   Count
PC      22
XS      17
X1      12
PS5      11
360      10
NS      9
PSX      7
ARC      5
GBA      5
NES      5
PS4      5
SNES   5
GEN      4
GB      3
N64      2
ZX      2
3DS      1
DOS      1
GBC      1
GG      1
PCE      1

Platform with the Most Beat Games: PC really had a commanding lead this year.  Between Steam Deck, setting up my curator account, and working on backlog stuff in a primarily Steam group, it had a heavy push this year.

Platform with the most unfinished titles: Again I didn't really keep track of abandoned games like last year, I really need to make an effort of keeping track of that somehow... but I think PC probably wins that, as I actually did real good finishing up console games that I started this year.

Current v. Retro v. Mobile/Handheld v. PC v Arcade: 54 - 37 - 11 - 22 - 5. (I am considering anything not PS4/X1/NS/PS5/XS to be "retro").  I considered making ZX and DOS under PC, but I kept it retro, so despite PC's big numbers, modern gaming still has a commanding lead, even retro smashes PC.  I added Arcade as a separate one this year, because I actually played a few arcade games this year and they definitely aren't all retro or modern.

Game that ate up the most time: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom hands down, it had roughly 200 hours logged.  I was thinking about Saints Row because it had nearly 100, but then I remembered TotK came out this year.

Quickest game beat: Another 100 hidden game, 100 hidden birds 2.

  • Best Racing Game: Forza Horizon 5 (XS)
  • Best Puzzle Game: Glass Masquerade (PC)
  • Best Platformer: Super Mario Bros. Wonder (NS)
  • Best RPG: Atelier Ryza 3 (NS)
  • Best Action Game: Lies of P (XS)
  • Best Story: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (NS)
  • Best Soundtrack: Wild Arms/Wild Arms 2 (PS5)
  • Best Shooter: Goldeneye 007 (XS)
  • Best Independent Game: Lies of P (XS)
  • Best Handheld Game: Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice (3DS)

  • Best Playstation Game: Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (PS5)

Yeah, the excessively part can make it easy to misinterpret.  Some folks might genuinely feel stick to it, and some might feel it's no pressure to stick to it, but don't send a thousand dollars worth of stuff.

I'm not your mom do what you want, but sending out a thousand dollars worth of stuff, no matter how generous the thought might be, might make the receiver feel guilty for only doing or staying near the limit and it can make the other gifters feel similarly.  I don't think this has really been a problem before on the high end, but it's worth noting that might be the interpretation of excessively.

I will say I have seen in previous years folks not sticking to it as a minimum though.

I started to play the newest (and last) Saints Row game, since it was given free, but I played for an hour or so and it just wasn't feeling great, I know it's been patched up after going through development hell, but it just sorta feels like an outdated, janky, game with a decent character creator.

That got me thinking about how something like Saints Row: The Third still plays, as I had that Remastered version from a few years back, and gotta say...It's not bad.  It's a little old school feeling of course, it's bound to be, but it's not far off from the recent game.  Honestly, Saints Row 2022 feels like it could have come out right around something like Saints Row IV, which was 10 years ago. A real shame as someone who use to really love the series, even when it got with Saints Row IV and Gat Out Of Hell.  It even hit a point with Saints Row 2, where I personally thought it was better than GTA4, a game I think is genuinely not good.

I'll probably keep playing Saints Row: The Third at least for abit, since I haven't played one of these types of games in a long while.
I played it recently and really enjoyed it.  Felt like SR3 to me, which for sure is outdated, but fun.

Mine's going to be real weak because as the days go by, I buy less and less.  I won't get into the whatever of that

In chronological order

1) Death Stranding (PS5)
Got this for like $5 because a store had the PS5 version marked as the PS4 price

2) Call of Duty Vanguard (XS)
Got this for like $3 because a store had the XS version marked as X1

3. WWE 2k23 (XS)
Gamestop had it marked down to like $7, bought two copies, one arrived as the X1 version which traded in for like $20

That's like it.  I got quite a bit this year (looks like I added 151 items to my collection this year, some being items I already had and missed adding, so even less), but nothing really noteworthy.  Lots of stuff free or next to nothing through subsidizing.  Most of my "purchases" this year were steam games, which were all subsidized/free.

I'm behind again on my notes... ugh.  I'm going to make an effort to finish up before 2024... maybe.

bummer, reading about it, it sounds like this year it was actually 20,000$ and 200 transactions.  I could've dumped quite a bit.  Next year is $5k and no transaction limit.

2023 started me down the "anti-collecting" path and 2024 will seem me continuing this trend.
I understand this is a collecting site.. and I am in no way suggesting others do the same, but as I get older I find the idea of accumulating "things" no longer interests me. Its funny, because while I've been getting rid of all my physical games, and repurchasing the games I actually want to play in a digital format, I also find my wanting to PLAY more games. So with all this said, here are my 3 goals for 2024

1. Finish selling off the rest of my physical collection.
2. Repurchase the select digital games I actually intend on playing and get them cataloged on the site.
3. PLAY MORE GAMES.

That's it, nice and simple.
How are you going about selling things?  I've been thinking about that a lot lately.  I'm at the point that the only games I have out on display are games I actually intend on playing, everything else is boxed away.  So I think about selling off the boxed away stuff (literally thousands of games) but I just don't see any good way to get rid of them.

. Go to local game shop and get pennies on the dollar or less because I would want cash and not store credit
. Sell on ebay, hit the $600 minimum, have to file taxes on the sales, deal with ebay's rising selling costs, shipping costs, potential scammers, and still not be able to sell half of it.
. Sell locally and deal with 99% "Still available? [Yes] Will you take $1 for all of it?"

Same.

I count the game for the year the game is beat.  I've literally counted a game that I beat like 5 minutes after midnight on New Years because that's when I beat it.
