News / STATS! The Return - January, 2015
« on: January 14, 2015, 09:23:38 pm »
Alright folks, I'm back with the first set of stats, since March of last year... which I feel crappy about. But, while I've been slacking on saving and posting the monthly stats for VGCollect, she has been growing all the while!

As part of getting back into the swing of things, I'm going to post up a mini Stats update. And as part of our weekly work nights, I'll be logging the stats once again. Hopefully we never go this long between stats updates ever again.

So lets take a look at what's been happening behind the scenes during this time...

Users

We are up to almost 19,000 registered accounts! Amazing! And so far this month, we've seen 215 new members join the site. Welcome to all the new people this month and the folks I missed while I was MIA!

- Total Registered Users: 18,969
- New Users This Month: 215
- Daily Average: 17

Items

The database keeps growing as well. We are currently sitting at 69,998 individual items listed on the site, that's great! As of when I did the totals we were only 2 items away from 70,000 items!

This month alone we've seen 973 new items added to the database, with 1,197 edits done to existing entries too! Great work guys!

- Total Items in Database: 69,998
- New Items This Month: 973
- Daily Average Items: 75
- Edits This Month: 1,197
- Daily Average Edits: 92

Collections

Collections has always been where the big numbers are and they tend not to disappoint. In the absence of stats posts, the collection totals have seemingly skyrocketed. The last stats update listed our total at 758,102. Now, we are sitting at 1,189,690 total items being tracked across all collections!

This month alone, you guys are averaging 2,143 items being added to your collections DAILY! That's amazing. According to my spreadsheet, the highest average we've ever had in the history of VGC has been 1,450/day back in April of '13.

Wishlists and Sell Lists have gotten a lot of love as well, with 157,545 items being tracking across all Wishlists and 4,784 items up for sale/trade.

- Total Items in Collections: 1,189,690
- Total Added to Collections This Month: 27,861
- Daily Average Added to Collections: 2,143

- Total Items in Wishlists: 157,545
- Total Added to Wishlists This Month: 4,784
- Daily Average Added to Wishlists: 368

- Items For Sale/ Trade: 7,661
- Total Added to Sell List This Month: 107
- Daily Average Added to Sell List: 8

So there we go! It wasn't a mini-mini update, other than the fact that it only covered half the month thus far. As I said, I'll be updating the spreadsheet every wednesday from now on and will make a point to post the stats monthly again as well.

Great job guys!

Hey guys,

2014 was a super rough year for cash and apparently I screwed up my tax return last year, and owe the IRS some extra. That being said, all year I held off on selling some of stuff, though I did sell off a few games earlier.

Anyway,

In order to help keep my head above water. I put Panzer Dragoon Saga up on the chopping block, along with e the Saturn editions of Resident Evil and Street Fighter Alpha 2.

It was a very tough decision to make and I wish I didn't have to do it.
Thanks for looking!

Just got an email from Atlus that Dragon's Crown will be a freebie for the month of August, for PS+ members.

If you like scrolling beat 'em up action rpgs, then hop on it if you haven't bought a physical copy yet. It's a super fun game.

« on: June 26, 2014, 05:29:05 pm »
Hey all. I've been strapped for cash for a while now. So I tossed a few Saturn games up on Ebay. Feel free to bid on any of these if you're interested, it was a hard choice to make. But when your bank account is in the negative with 4 days to go until Pay day, you gotta do what you gotta do.

Thanks.

Sad day Castlevania fans. We won't be seeing another IGA headed Castlevania title, ever.

I guess this means that "classic" Metroidvania Castlevania games are truely dead.

Modern Video Games / Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2!
« on: February 25, 2014, 10:50:18 am »
It released today, who all is picking it up? Mine is out for delivery right now and hopefully I can get some game time in on it tonight!

I never played the demo, so I'm not sure how it feels compared to Lords of Shadow. But I'm really hoping that they fixed all the issues I had with the first one.

Hardware and Tech / Fuzzy video on SNES
« on: February 19, 2014, 11:13:16 am »
Hey guys, I was playing Yoshi's Island the other day and I noticed that the picture was kinda fuzzy. I'm currently hooked up to it via the console's original RF adapter. I think it's something strange going on because when  I load up my Genesis on the same type of connection, it's crystal clear.

News / End of Month Stats for January, 2014
« on: February 01, 2014, 01:04:10 am »
Welcome to February, 2014! I know I slacked a lot on doing the Stats posts last year and I've promised to make sure to keep on the ball this year.

It's time for January's Stats! We've made some big changes to the site and hit some good milestones in our birthday month, and one of which we already shared with everyone. We are now tracking over 700,000 items across all collections! There's a lot to be excited about and I know I'm super hyped for the site.

But, enough talk, have at you!

Users

In January we saw a total of 486 new users join the site. This brings us up to 13,610 members! Welcome to the VGCollect community folks!

  • Total Registered Users: 13,610
  • New Users: 486
  • Daily Average: 16

Items

The growth in the database continues as we added another 1,438 items to the site over the course of January.

Now you might be wondering; "If we hit 50k last month, how come we are only at 51.3k, if we added over 1400 item's?".

Well, considering that we've had to merge and delete duplicate items and have been doing general clean up, the numbers don't line up. At the end of 2013 we did indeed have 50k items listed, but due to the dupes the number is slightly skewed. Still, 1438 items added is a impressive number and we haven't hit a total that high since May of last year. Nice work!

Speaking of nice work, in January we saw a total of 3,760 edits done to items in the database! Again, the highest number we've seen since last May. Very impressive!

  • Total Items in Database: 51,372
  • New Items: 1,438
  • Daily Average: 46
  • Edits: 3,760
  • Daily Average Edits: 121

Collections

In the last month we saw a total of 41,421 items added to user's collections, with an average of 1,336 items added to collections per day! That number blows my mind. With these additions, we broke the 700k mark, with 727,286 items across all collections listed on VGCollect! Amazing!

The wishlist is growing constantly as well and currently it's sitting at 75,370 items, I find it neat that it's a little over 10% of the collection total. This month we saw a record with 9,457 items added to wishlists, breaking April, 2013's total of 7,629.

Again the Sell List is the weakest total of the Stats. In January we saw 125 items put of for Trade/Sale on the Sell List. Brining the total of items up for sale up to 4,373. What's neat is that this is only an increase of 49 items over last month's total. Which means it looks like the Sell List is doing it's job fairly well.

  • Total Items in Collections: 727,286
  • Total Added to Collections: 41,421
  • Daily Average: 1,336
  • Total Items in Wishlists: 75,370
  • Total Added to Wishlists: 9,457
  • Daily Average Added to Wishlists: 305
  • Items For Sale/ Trade: 4,373
  • Total Added to Sell List: 125
  • Daily Average Added to Sell List: 4

So there you have it! The first batch of Stats for 2014. And With that you have my promise that I'll not miss out on collecting the data again.

General / What Are Your 2014 Gaming Goals?
« on: January 30, 2014, 09:15:16 am »
Sin2Beta started this idea for me in the Recently Completed thread. We have a thread for our Collection Goals for 2014. We all have games that we've wanted to finish but never gotten around to it, what are your goals for gaming in 2014?

I'd like to finally finish off these this year:

- Super Mario Bros
- Super Mario Bros 2
- Etrian Odyssey
- Legend of Zelda: Link Between Worlds
- Persona 3
- Xenoblade Chronicles
- Radiant Historia
- Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride
- Panzer Dragoon Saga

I'm sure there are more, but these are the top of my list at the moment.

I've added the following categories:

Dreamcast Demo
GameCube Demo

PlayStation Demo
PlayStation 2 Demo
PlayStation 3 Demo
Sega Saturn Demo
Wii Demo
Xbox Demo
Xbox 360 Demo

Video Game Database Discussion / Foil Covers
« on: January 24, 2014, 04:32:31 pm »
I was looking at my Saturn games, namely Albert Odyssey, and can't help but think that with all my photoshop skills there has to be a way to make the cover look better than it does currently.

Anyone have any ideas on scanning foiled covers to that they come out closer to the real thing?
