I really miss classic Black Sabbath and Ozzy with Randy. I havent been a huge fan of most past Blizzard and Diary.
Have you ever heard of Steel Panther? They play oldschool sounding glam metal, but theyre a comedy band too.
Easily the most misogynistic lyrics I've ever heard, so avoid listening to them around sensitive girls ;)
Sensitive girls? Is there any other kind of girl?Of course there is, Soera, my naive & innocent friend...
I have my own oneman acoustic metal band
There's not near enough Metallica love in this thread.
I have my own oneman acoustic metal band
Oxymoron. Metal can not be acoustic.
I just bought a random Manowar album yesterday. The Triumph of Steel... It's my first time listening to them, and I'm quite enjoying this.

You should watch one of their live DVDs lol. Theyre pretty hilarious, especially when they wear the loincloths and stuff haha

Like...GWAR?
Like...GWAR?
Not even remotely close to as good as Gwar!
I got to see Gwar in 2010 with Lamb of God and Job For A Cowboy. After being a fan of theirs for over 10 years, their show was everything I could have hoped for!
Heh King Diamond ... thats old old school right there. Motorhead isnt bad. Megadeth is pretty decent. I havent heard of the other two.
Does anyone else listen to Disturbed? Ive been a super fan since 2000 when they came out. I was the only global moderator for the forums for a long time (I still am but its a slow site cause the band has taken a big hiatus so I havent been there in a while).
I have liked the few songs I have heard by Disturbed. What album do you recommend starting with?
How is being slow a bad thing? :(
"Alternative Metal" would probably be the most appropriate, honestly.

Its still metal! :) I like most "types" of metal but I do like to actually hear the words sometimes too ...

Must have been a pretty cool high school... Mine was filled with people who thought modern pop (of the time) was worth listening to and not much else.

AC/DC with Bon Scott is definitely more to my liking than Brian Johnson AC/DC. Of course, I still like a lot of the stuff from the post-Scott era.

I'm prolly one of the few who liked Diano better than Dickinson (Maiden) & Bon Scott over...whoever took his place in AC/DC 8)

Yeah - I don't *dislike* BJ('s) ;)
...I just prefer Bon Scott - same w/ Maiden...Dickinson's got a hell of a voice & an impressive range (comparable w/ Sebastian Bach-one of my favorite 'raw' voices); I just liked Diano/earlier albums better...maybe because it's what I was exposed to 1st?
On that note -while I wouldn't call Van Hagar "horrible"...IMHO; they just lost that VH chemistry w/o DLR.

But American Psycho and Famous Monsters were SUCH GOOD ALBUMS!
Isn't that the band Jason Newstead left Metallica for?
This band is practically unheard of. And it's a crime since this song is so incredibly awesome:
It's a nice mix of Black Metal and Melo-Death.
Blackie Lawless, lead-singer of WASP, died in a car accident today. R.I.P.
Reports are saying drugs and alcohol weren't involved.
been listening to metal all my life since aboout 5. i started with Christian metal which i still love

Not a religious person, but I enjoy some good Brutal Christian Death Metal! My mom did not believe me when I told her it existed.christian rock and metal is like rap music, there's a lot of crap but the good stuff is really good.

Same here. "He who is without sin, cast the first stone." (I know, surprising. I'm a metal-head and Christian)
Ugh, I'll take my metal without the inclusion of religion, thank you.It does not really matter to me as long as it sounds good.

I just hate the Rolling Stones, lol.
I'll have to give them a listen - Stryper was very much more of a '80's/hair-band' kind of "metal" :P

No love for the hair metal, I see. That's a shame. Some great stuff in there that just gets passed by so many metal-heads because it's all labeled as "cheesy". Clothing styles and hair styles aside, there's some good tunes in hair metal.
"...Moreover, I inform you that although I have nothing against you except for how you have hurt me, I profusely reject metal. Why? Because the music is dark, violent, and dull and encourages young people to walk the path of sin and become increasingly enclosed in a melancholy reverie, melodramatic and pointless. I will not lie, I heard metal bands and have rejected them.
To give an example, I will mention Metallica. The singer, Hetfield, is mediocre and shouts excessively, completely lacking the melody with which I was born. And the guitarist only makes noise. Where is the music, then? Another band that I've also heard is Megadeth. I thought it was different, but I was wrong. The singer uses a vocal style that I dislike, like something that makes me feel like crying. And the other musicians in the band... I'd rather not give an opinion."
-Justin Bieber on hard rock/metal genre of music
"I have seen the need to respond to the insults received yesterday from Justin Bieber, since his words have hurt my pride for referring to my art and my music negatively. The truth is, I felt really bad last night when I learned this because with all my years in music, I don't know what to do. I honestly do not know that all my years in this career have been disqualified by inexperienced people moving masses in a way that does not please me.
Technically, I could have taken legal action. But I choose not to, due to the boy's age... I will not torment him with a legal procedure. My sources have informed me that [Dave] Mustaine [from Megadeth], who is in his own right, has decided to take legal action but I doubt he will continue. We know that Dave is temperamental, but he has a good heart and this boy knows not what he says.
I'm not criticizing my colleague for going as low as him, but the only thing I do wanna say is [for Bieber to] have respect, which is what he lacks. He should learn that a momentary and transitory success does not rewrite the history of music. I also want to say that he has a huge future ahead and should use discretion. Not for him to impose the market.[?]
What struck me, of course, is your criticism of my public, to whom I owe everything because they made me who I am. They helped me achieve the transformation from being a nobody to being James Hetfield from Metallica. You cannot classify them as depressed, melodramatic, and dark. By doing that, you are trying to say that our style of music influences them to feel hatred. In the end, you're completely disqualifying our [musical] style."

Is this a bad thing for you? I loved the '80s!
Did anyone else pick up the new Black Sabbath album? I grabbed a copy on my way home from work. Really enjoying it so far.I've been listening to the Previews on amazon, Honestly it sounds very good. I was thinking about Picking it up today, but Grabbed the new Alice in Chains instead.
Batman NES Metal?
I will check them out. that band is Megadriver they mostly do Genesis/megadrive coversBatman NES Metal?
Year 200X is a metal band that does nothing but covers NES chip tunes and makes them into awesome metal themes. Check them out. The Mega Man 2/Mega Man 3 theme is my favorite by them.

I would definitely recommend it. It sounds a lot like their album Paranoid.

Then I'll definitely like it & end up getting it :)
Where did you buy it from? I got the two disc version for $13.99 from Hastings on release day.
That Doctor Who bit is pretty badass. Actually the guy seems to have some fun stuff on his channel, I'm listening to some more :P
Quick question:
Do you consider AC/DC and Guns 'N Roses heavy metal, or not?

I used to use Pandora, but I switched to Last.FM a while ago. What I liked better about it is how specific you can get on what you want to listen to. Lately I have been listening to a lot of doom metal, on Pandora there is one station: Doom Metal Radio.
On Last.FM I can choose:
Traditional Doom
Death-Doom
Gothic Doom
Epic Doom
Blackened Doom
Atmospheric Doom
Sludge Doom
etc.
Or I can just choose doom and get a combination of all of these!

Blackened Doom isn't bad. Sludge Doom is ok, depends on what mood I'm in.Yeah I am not a huge fan of those either, although I have not heard much of it. My favorites are traditional, death-doom, and gothic doom. I like to listen to some Sunn 0))) Drone every once in a while, but you definitely have to be in the right mood to listen to that stuff. What I love about Doom metal is all the different types there is. I have been listening to the genre for about a year and if I get tired of Saint Vitus, Trouble, and Candlemass I can go to My Dying Bride, Anathema and Katatonia.
I got more metal CDs!Is Testament Souls of Black good? I almost picked it up the other day, but most people consider it to be their worst CD.

Just heard 1 of my favorite songs ("Turn the Page")!
So, my fellow metal-heads...which is better
A. The Bob Seger version or
B. the Metallica one?
Heavier doesn't *ALWAYS* = better; does it?!
Guns 'n' Roses did a cover of a *Charles Manson* song :o
It's apparently a 'hidden' track # 13 on "The Spaghetti Incident" - now, just out of curiosity, I'm gonna be going to see wtf *that* shit sounds like...
Anybody else here already know that/heard the song?

Oh sure. The song's fine. Its what you would expect from 60s folksie music from San Francisco. Manson did a couple albums IIRC. I recall back in the 90s watching 60 minutes (or was it 20/20) where they have a trivia question at the end of the show. They said "who played this song" and they played the original version of that song, not the GNR version. And I shout out "CHARLES MANSON!" and the g-parents are like "NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY" and we have some little argument about how Charles Manson is a bad person, blah blah blah. After the commercial break, the TV said it was Charles Manson. :)
Speaking of Maiden...where do the rest of you stand on D'ianno vs. Dickinson?
I didn't know that there were this many metal gamers, I thought I was one of the few.
I'm getting into Testament right now. I'm listening to the album "Souls of Black." They sound a LOT like Kill 'Em All era Metallica. That song was great! I might stop by Hastings on Friday after work and pick up a copy. Have you listened to their album Demonic? They can play pretty good death metal for a thrash band. My personal favorite album of what I have listened to is The Legacy.
The song, "The Legacy", in particular, is one of the best metal ballads I've ever heard.

The whole album, I think, is pretty damned good, Alex Skolnik (as always) shreds on the guitar -and- I think that now I'll have to go dust-off my CD of it, and give it a listen.
Yeah; too lazy to get the link -but- trust me, if you like the Legacy - it's worth tracking it down & giving it a listen...
I'm not/never was geeky in the least...tbqh...more of a "burn-out", "class clown", "tough guy", long-haired, heavy metal musician type (guitar - B4 I lost the hand).
I think that gamers (as a whole) get a bad rep (by default) of being geeks...most of the gamers I'm friends w/ irl *definitely* wouldn't be seen/considered as "geeks", either ;)

"Geek" is nothing to be ashamed of
I wear the title proudly.
The Crimson Idol was the fifth studio album by American heavy metal band W.A.S.P., originally released by Capitol Records in 1992 (1993 in the United States). The album is a concept album, telling the story of the rise and fall of a fictional rock star named Jonathan Steel.
The album took nearly three years to complete, and was originally recorded as a Blackie Lawless solo album, but Lawless bowed to fan pressure and released it under the W.A.S.P. moniker.
I like & still listen to a lot of hair-metal bands & music...
I didn't know that there were this many metal gamers, I thought I was one of the few.
Metal is surprisingly geeky music :P

And Testament is a good example of this too. On Low, they did a song called Urotsukidoji, which is the Japanese name of the anime OVA Legend of the Overfiend.

Cool. I really enjoyed Shogun and Holographic Universe. But try to find Scar Symmetry's Pitch Black Progress. Far better album in my opinion.

Already have it. It is a fantastic album, indeed. I really wish the original singer would return to the band. They just aren't the same since he left.
I also used to have Holographic Universe and Soundtrack To Your Escape; but they seemed to sprout legs and disappear. You know how that happens.
I grabbed the new Avenged Sevenfold album today. It's good stuff. Track 1 is very Metallica-esque and #3 is very GnR. I like it so far. It's more heavy and not as radio friendly as the last 2 albums.

Try their first album, if that's what you want. They sound like a completely different band. Melodic Death Metal. Avenged Sevenfold TOTALLY sold out to get on the radio.
If you had the choice of 20 video games of your choosing (not including arcade cabinets) or 20 albums of your choosing (any format); which would you choose? And if you want to include it, which ones?

I would definitely choose games over CDs. There was a time in my life where music was more important than video games, and I would have chosen the opposite. I have quite a music collection amassed, but I care more for my video game collection. Maybe that's just how it is when you get older. ...Or something. :P

Nice! Love the classic stuff. My favorites out of those would be Ratt (saw them twice!), Motley Crue, Rainbow (Metal is Dio!), and Scorpions.
I was at Wal-Mart today buying stuff for the baby and the car. I decided to see what music they still had. Not much is what comes to mind. I did however find Amon Amarths Deceiver of the Gods sandwiched between a couple of Jason Aldean CDs. For $9 I liberated it from that hellish prison.
I'm diggin it. 8)
That's awesome! The ONLY place to get decent CDs around here anymore is Best Buy. And that's only if the album is fairly recent. Like they have the new Children of Bodom, new Amon Amarth, and new Megadeth. But they don't have the older albums. Unfortunately, they reduced the CD section, A LOT. You might get lucky at Goodwill, too.
They shut down our music shop in the mall (F.Y.E.) and Circuit City shut down (which had a fantastic selection of CDs at a great price).
So I order most of my CDs off of eBay anymore.

Just picked up two Saint Vitus CDs there, Children of Doom and Die Healing.
For the Metallica fans out there:
What is your favorite Metallica instrumental song?
-(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth (Kill 'Em All)
-Call of the Ktulu (Ride the Lightning)
-Orion (Master of Puppets)
-To Live Is To Die (...And Justice For All)
-Ecstasy of Gold (S & M)
Orion from Master of Puppets is my favorite. Such freaking awesome riffs and solos through-out that masterpiece of a song!
But all of them are fan-freaking-tastic! \m/
Can any one here recommend me some good death/black metal bands?

I do not know a whole lot about the genre, but here are a few I like:
Disembowelment (DeathDoom)
Death
Summoning (Atmospheric Black Metal)
Agalloch (Atmospheric Black Metal)
I'm going odd man out here and say, To Live is to Die.
Quick question. Does anybody know anything about a band named Noumena. A Melodic Death Metal band from Finland. I have been trying to get a hold of their album Absence.
Did anyone see Metallica Through the Never? I wanted to go to the IMAX and enjoy it, but it just didn't work out.

I can't imagine how pretentious a Metallica movie would be at this point in their career. Count me out.

Did you try contacting the band directly?
http://www.noumena.info/contact.php
I did actually. Have yet to get a reply. I have been doing some digging around since then though and it comes to find out. It's out of print, since their contract through Spinefarm Records ended. The only copy I seen was on Ebay for $250ish.
They actually created their own label (Haunted Zoo Production) and if all goes well with their newest album Death Walks With Me they will re-release their other albums. Here's to hoping.
My latest CD purchases:
-Dark Tranquility - Manifesto of Dark Tranquility
-Deathstars - Termination Bliss
-Omnium Gatherum - Spirits and August Light
-Disarmonia Mundi - Mind Tricks
I REALLY wanted Omnium Gatherum's album Red Shift. But the cheapest I could find it was over $200!!! WTF?!

Your taste in 80s music is impeccible, my friend!
I have CDs and records too but I enjoy listening to tapes at home. Records not so much because they are too annoying. Keep having to get up to flip it over or deal with it skipping. CDs I just listen to in the car.
What makes you prefer listening to cassettes over CD's at home?
So, let's talk about...Nu-Metal.
So how do you feel about Nu-Metal? Like it? Hate it?
there are bands I see in list of nu metal bands that I don't think belong wether I like them or not (ex. linkin park, Incubus)

Other bands like Tool and Disturbed are definitely questionable. But Linkin Park isn't; they most definitely have a rap influence in their music. No doubt about them, they're nu-metal.

I guess I Should re-word that a little Linnkin Park never struck me as "metal", Rock yes but not Metal. Then again I never really cared enough for Linkin Park to listen to anything outside of what you heard on the Radio.
I'd like to build a list of games that center around metal/hard rock or have a significant amount of metal/hard rock tracks in them. Suggestions are welcome.
Ones I can think of off the top of my head:
-Brutal Legend
-Crue Ball
-Guitar Hero series
-KISS Pinball
-Lords of Thunder (the soundtrack is definitely metal-inspired)
-Rise of the Six String
-Road Rash series (3DO/Saturn/PS1 era)
-Rock Band series
-Rocksmith
-Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series
What else have you got?

Nice! I have personally only listened to Deceiver of the Gods and really liked it.
^ The more you dig, them more you find how incredibly connected the metal world actually is.
BTW, Trans-Siberian Orchestra is awesome! I guess I'm gonna have to check out Savatage.
There are better bands that make use of an orchestra than TSO. They're OK but I would not listen to them. We get bombared with radio commercials for them 3 months of the year.
dose anyone here like halestorm
oh god, i would rather listen to the kenny g discography then llimp bizkit and kenny g makes elevator musicdose anyone here like halestorm
Meh. Radio-rock that I could live without. It's not completely terrible, like Limp Bizkit or anything, though.

Seriously, I'd like to give them a listen.
Metalhead here, I listen to a lot of bands, mostly Melodic Death Metal & Power Metal. You can check out my lastfm profile (picture is really old btw) http://www.lastfm.se/user/Veilors/library
This better? http://www.last.fm/user/Veilors/library?setlang=en
^ Nice tastes! You named a lot of my favorites.
BTW, is this particular page (no others on the site) annoyingly laggy and taking far too long to load for anyone else? I thought it might have been from too many YouTube videos being posted on it, so I deleted a few of my posts containing them, and it didn't seem to help.
My new guitar!
Pretty stoked for the new Overkill album coming out this month.Same here and just like the last two albums I'm going to go into this one blind, in fact I didn't even know there was a new album till like a week ago when I got an email about it from a store. and that reminds me I still need to grb Prong's new album also

Anyone here diehard into metal?
I listen to alot of death metal, grind and avant-garde / experimental metal.
Whats all you guys into?
Which the band is reportedly very happy with. But then, they also expressed how happy they were with Annette. This news was a surprise to me.
Anyone else get/lke the new Judas Priest album?
No "Diamonds & Rust" level songs on it but, overall - it's pretty good.

I thought it was kind of a...best of album, with all new songs. You have old rock stuff like they use to do, more standard heavy metal from the likes of British Steel, and then stuff kinda more like Painkiller. Overall a solid album and certainly way more listenable than Nostrodamus which only had a good song or two. The only songs I don't like on the album that I feel are almost unlistenable are Bring it On and Hell & Back. The lyrics are such a level of cheese, I just can't handle them lol

Did anyone listen to Halestorm's new CD?
You mean the 2012 album? I thought it was okay. There's nothing by them I love album wise, but they have a few good songs here and there. When they get heavier or faster, or Lizzy really goes all out, I think that's their best, but they do alot of just kinda boring rock stuff. She has a fantastic voice though. They also do good covers. I mean, what modern band is choosing Dissident Aggressor as their Priest cover? lol
I have not listened to Halestorm before, but that Judas Priest cover is amazing!
I would drink Amy Lee's bathwater.

I've noticed a lot of these music threads in video game forums and it seems 9 times out of 10 it's heavy rock or metal that people like. Although I like rock (grew up in the 80's) but doesn't anyone like any lighter music? Country? Maybe it's because I'm almost 45 but I prefer soft rock or some pop, country. NEVER metal. I hear that stuff at work (I'm in construction). Sometimes I'll go on youtube and play some of that relaxation music with nature sounds, stuff like that. I need music to be calming at my age.

Anybody heard of Maximum the Hormone? They are more of the Nu Metal genre (New Metal).
Mustaine > Hammet
Ride the Lightning, Kill em All, and Master of Muppets > most Megadeth
Most Megadeth > than any Metallica not mentioned above 8)

Who shuns And Justice For All?
St. Anger, I shun, however. That's because the song writing is incredibly repetitive, and it sounds like it was recorded with a Fisher-Price recorder. Oh and did Lars trade-in his drum-kit for tin cans on that album, or what? I bought the album, and literally tossed out the window after about a week of trying to give it a try.

Crap, I got my bands mixed up lol I meant to say As I Lay Dying, of which lead vocalist Tim Lambesis was sent to jail this year for attempting to hire a hitman to take out his wife.

Ah. I heard about that. I still have two of their albums, though. Good band. Too bad we won't be hearing from them anymore.
Holy shit, apparently Wayne Static of Static-X just died.

Used to be into Death/Thrash Metal a lot. Now mostly into Doom/Sludge/Stoner Rock.
Monolord>all
Well shit...Shawn Drover and Chris Broderick just left Megadeth. With the new album going into production in January and both basically doing it in the same day and Broderick's message talking about creative differences, my guess is that neither one was getting much input into the next album and decided to leave.
Super disappointing to see another lineup change in a band that has had many of them. Mustaine has always been the driving force of the band, that's not surprising, but I'm curious after Super Collider, if they wanted to see more metal or even just more thrash brought back into the music and Mustaine isn't wanting that, wanting to continue what Super Collider did or even further in the direction. That would really suck for me personally if that is what happened. Super Collider was a big disappoint in terms of writing, with way too much rock and rather slow stuff going on. It was feeling more of like what Cryptic Writings was before they dove into Risk, which is a terrible Megadeth album. I was actually getting excited for the album because I heard Mustaine was sorta saying this would be a "shut up" kind of album to sorta appease the metalheads, but maybe it won't be that...Perhaps they left cause they just weren't getting any input at all, even with things going in the metal direction.
Anyways, here's one of the few songs of the past three albums that features the other band members in the writing credits, this one in particular being a big push for Drover, even from Mustaine when it was put out and I believe got them the Grammy Nomination for that year.
No big surprise to me. It's always been Dave's band, and it's always had a rotating line-up of musicians. But to his credit, that revolving line-up has always featured excellent metal musicians.
SLAYERRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!\m/ Slayer is awesome \m/
Ever thought St. Anger sounded like garbage? Of course you do, that's a fact! But apparently two musicians and a singer took it upon themselves to re-record the entire St. Anger album and released something REALLY good. It's still not a great Metallica album, but man is it actually listenable and enjoyable with some proper production. These guys did it on a very tight budget and limited time span and produced something far better sounding than either of Metallica's newest over-produced disasters.I REALLY loved St.Anger. It was the first Metallica Album I owned. This "re-make" makes St. Anger makes it even better than it was originally produced!

^ Seriously.
Remember those toy Fisher-Price tape-recorders you could get in the 80s and early 90s? It totally sounds like they used one of those to record the album. And the drums, what's with those damn tin-can drums?
Besides the production value, I just couldn't stand the incredibly repetitive song-writing on that album. When before, you could listen to Metallica album 50 times over and still find depth and new nuances in songs you didn't notice before.

I saw this new album coming out by them, and remembered hearing about Wayne Static's death here. So I thought I'd share about the new album, here.
The new album is called Project Regeneration:

Apparently they uncovered a bunch of tracks and various songs Wayne Static had been working on and much of it has isolated voice tracks, even. So they are able to put together some full songs, and are using guest-vocalists where they can't. Sounds interesting. I'm honestly not the biggest Static-X fan (though I don't hate them, either), so I haven't heard any of it, yet. It was released this month.
